Noah is a simple guy from a provincial town, who grew up in a very poor family and works at a sawmill. Ellie is a girl from an aristocratic family, whose parents represent the most common approach to life for people of high society: people of a lower class cannot deserve any of their precious time, only equals or those who are higher receive attention. At the same time, this policy of relatives did not have any bad influence on Ellie, the girl is quite well brought up, is familiar with good manners and does not behave like an arrogant bitch, arrogantly condemning everyone who was not lucky enough to be born in the house of the rich. However, the difference in social strata is obvious, so it simply won’t happen. Ellie and Noah meet at an amusement park, where he falls hopelessly in love with her and immediately asks her out. A little time passes, and we see a fully formed couple, Ellie reciprocates Noah’s feelings. But if Noah’s father is clearly delighted with his son’s girlfriend, then Ellie’s parents are fundamentally against such a union. The scene of Noah meeting Ellie's parents at dinner perfectly demonstrates to the audience the attitude of high-seated majors towards representatives of the lower classes. Ellie is young and ambitious, everything inside her is on fire, she doesn’t share her parents’ opinion about Noah at all, and therefore she constantly fights with them, defending her choice. But the trouble is that Noah once heard one such quarrel and came to the conclusion that nothing good would come of this relationship. But love is a corrosive thing, you can’t just get rid of such feelings, so the very next day Noah went to his beloved, where he discovered that Ellie’s family had moved on. Finding only an empty house in place, Noah begins to write a wild number of letters in which he admits that he was wrong and wants to be only with her, that he is ready to come anywhere, even to the ends of the world. These letters naturally fell into the hands not of Ellie, but of her snobbish mother, who simply hid all this romantic writing far away, so that all these stupid thoughts of building a relationship with a hillbilly would not return to her beloved daughter. Noah finally wrote the last letter, and then there was a war. After the war, Noah returned to his city and began restoring the house in which he dreamed of living with Ellie and even made her a promise that everything would be so. Having completed the house, he puts it up for sale through an advertisement in the newspaper. What about Ellie? Ellie worked in a hospital during the war and met a wounded pilot there. The guy turned out to be very nice and interesting, so after the war they started dating, and then he even proposed to her. Parents, of course, are delighted, they say, this is a good match. Well, Ellie agrees, and to be honest, she does everything right, the pilot turned out to be quite a worthy representative of the military profession and the male half of humanity in general. But after seeing an advertisement in the newspaper for the sale of the very house next to which Noah is standing as if nothing had happened, Ellie rushes to him so that before the wedding she can still decide what she really needs. Well, then everything is according to protocol: a friendly dinner, a romantic walk, unplanned sex and a conversation in a raised voice, which should clarify what is really between them. And if Noah clearly says that he wants to be only with her, then Ellie is slightly confused, because she is already on the threshold of family life with a very worthy pilot guy. And it was not her fault that life had torn them apart so cruelly, that she had not received his letters, that the advertisement in the newspaper appeared only now, and not six months earlier. And she needs to make a decision: follow her heart or her conscience? The film is based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, which became a bestseller in its first week of sales. The story of an all-consuming love carried through the years has been read by millions of people, and the movie is one of the most highly rated representatives of its genre. The production was done at a very decent level, the atmosphere of those times was convincingly recreated, starting from the town itself, where the main events take place, and ending with cars, clothes and smaller details. It was very important to choose the main performers. In order for the viewer to truly care about the main characters, it is simply necessary that the actors themselves believe in what they are playing. In essence, they don’t have to play their characters, but live their lives. The slightest pretense and the whole thing will smack of falsehood, but a seasoned viewer can smell this a mile away. So who was invited? The movie was released in 2004, but it had been in development since 1995. And then Tom Cruise was planned for the role of Noah, and I honestly don’t know what would have come of it, since I treat Cruise differently. Perhaps back in 1995 he would have been a good fit for this role; just remember the film “The Distant Country”. But in 2004, Tom was a little too old for this role, purely my opinion. Justin Timberlake was also planned to play this role, and this is also unclear. As an actor, Timberlake can perform well, his role in “Alpha Dog” is great, but the character of Noah and Mr. N’Sync somehow don’t go well together in my head. In the end they chose Ryan Gosling. A very bright actor, capable of conveying a whole range of emotions with just his eyes. His performance of Noah looks very convincing, and you really empathize with his character. The role of Ellie went to Rachel McAdams. A cheerful girl from a successful family, who has not known any difficulties or obstacles in life, under the heavy pressure of her fate changes right before her eyes. First love inspires, but separation can drive you into a very deep hole. It didn't break. Then the war, where she also did not sit out behind the backs of her influential ancestors. In the post-war years, we see a woman, although young, but already quite capable of making her own decisions. McAdams was quite able to play out these changes and experiences of her heroine. What's the result? It is immediately clear that the film was made on the basis of a good literary source, that the story was not at all made up, but was written by the author with a full understanding of the matter. What’s interesting is that watching this film makes sense not only for the fair sex and terribly romantic guys, since this movie is not just an attraction, but a full-fledged demonstration that ideal love exists on our planet, maybe once every hundred years, maybe not in your case, but it happens. We look at them and hope to try on such a life for ourselves. Good movie.
