Alexander Etkind wrote excellently about Ryazanov, comparing him with his teacher, Kozintsev. Here is a fragment about what I think is Ryazanov’s best film, “Beware of the Car,” with very unexpected implications: “Ryazanov did not talk about how Kozintsev reacted to the comedy that made him famous, “Beware of the Car” (1966).

There were reasons for the silence: the film parodies Kozintsev and his “Hamlet”. In the films of the teacher and the student - "Hamlet" and "Beware of the Car" - the same actor, Smoktunovsky, plays Hamlet - first as a tragedy, and then as a farce. In Ryazanov's comedy, Hamlet becomes a play within a play—another Shakespeare's Mousetrap, which reveals the secret of the main plot, but only for those who have the courage to understand the wandering actors [50].

Beware of the Car depicts a corrupt Moscow society in which almost everyone who is recognized as part of it benefits from underground distribution networks. Having your own car is a symbol of success here. Smoktunovsky plays the charming adventurer and belated utopian Yuri Detochkin. Endowed with this childhood name, the hero fights the corruption of the Soviet elite with his own methods: tracking down high-ranking scammers, he steals their cars, sells them on the black market and transfers money to orphanages.

When his scheme is discovered, some denounce Detochkin as a criminal, while others consider him a doomed idealist. Refusing to recognize the dystopia of contemporary Soviet history, this noble savage adheres to the strategy of the bygone revolutionary generation: he expropriates the expropriators. Like Kozintsev, Detochkin is a man of the 1920s living in the 60s. He is a walking anachronism, and therefore both funny and talented.

He loves and is loved, he is a good driver and a skilled burglar, he is a gifted actor. In the intervals between car thefts, we see Detochkin rehearsing the role of Hamlet as part of an amateur theater troupe. Then he is tried in an open trial, where he is defended by several characters of the older generation - the last guardians of the revolutionary fire. Among them is his mother. It is significant that we know nothing about Detochkin’s father.

One of the overarching themes of the film is friendship. In one episode, Detochkin wants to buy a pack of Belomor, popular Soviet cigarettes whose name contains a hidden reference to the Gulag. But the kiosk has run out of Belomor, and Detochkin is content with “Friend” cigarettes. The motto of the “thaw” could indeed be “focus on friendship, not camps.” Endowed with the talent of friendship, Detochkin finds friends even among those who are investigating his case.

In the end, of course, friendship gives way to the law and Detochkin is sent to a modern version of the Gulag. But at the very end of the film he returns to his friends. Like Hamlet, Detochkin and his friends retain the loyal values ​​of their fathers, which brings them into mortal conflict with the decayed generation of their contemporaries. The main characters of the film stage and rehearse Hamlet, and the premiere of this amateur performance is shown in the film.

This short version of Hamlet presents the plot and solution of the film, just as The Mousetrap does in Shakespeare's tragedy itself. While rehearsing Shakespeare in an amateur theater owned by two trade unions (taxi drivers and police workers), Detochkin-Hamlet meets his opponent - investigator Podberezovikov, who plays Laertes. Together they listen to the director's long and funny speech, which echoes the children's utopianism.

Isn't it obvious, the director asks, that actors who are not paid to perform perform better than professionals? Without delay, the director moves on to “Our William Shakespeare,” putting the wrong emphasis on the name “William.” This director, with his high voice, important air of a Soviet cultural figure and characteristic talk about the modernization of the English classic, resembles an evil caricature of Kozintsev. The fact that Smoktunovsky several years earlier played Hamlet in the highly professional and deadly serious “Hamlet”, and now plays him in an amateur performance that causes laughter among generations of moviegoers, turns “Beware of the Car” into a blasphemous parody of Kozintsev’s film. The parody scene of Hamlet shows his duel with Laertes, which ends with his death to the loud and out-of-tune accompaniment of an amateur orchestra, presenting a wicked parody of Shostakovich's music to Hamlet.

Immediately following the duel scene is a trial scene in which the same actors and opponents meet again - this time as investigator and defendant. The first makes a speech in which he admits that the complexity of the world in Hamlet’s understanding is very different from the Soviet tradition: “He is guilty,” asserts investigator Podberezovikov, “but he is not guilty,” a brilliant formula that refutes the deepest essence of Soviet jurisprudence. The court finds Detochkin guilty, but a happy ending takes the place of Kozintsev's funeral of Hamlet in Ryazanov's film. Months or years pass, but the hero, aged and shaved bald, but still recognizable, returns from the camp to his bride; and she remained the same as she was.

“The world remains the same,” and Detochkin’s last line is “I’m back!” - accompanied by Smoktunovsky’s wide smile. This well-known scene is a real epitaph for those who returned from the Gulag, a short saga about decades of Soviet experience. Ryazanov's film ends on a conciliatory note. It exposes the widespread corruption in late Soviet society, but also condemns Detochkin’s attempt to solve the problem by force. At the center of the film is a delightful but childish avenger, and the punishment that the Soviet court gives him seems mild and fair. "Beware of the Car" shows the problems of late Soviet society, but does not offer solutions.

Ryazanov stops where Kozintsev goes to the end. From the parody "Hamlet" we see only one scene - the mutual murder of Hamlet and Laertes. We were not told how the director of the trade union theater staged other parts of this tragedy, for example, the scene with the ghost. Apart from a passing reference to "Belomor", the victims of the Soviet state are not mentioned in the film; Detochkin is not a victim. At the end of the “thaw,” censorship would not have allowed talking about victims, but that’s not the only issue. Most of all, Detochkin and his friends mourn the lost Soviet ideals, and in this they are at one with the hapless censorship.

But for many Muscovites these ideals no longer mean anything, and their indifference in the film becomes a sign of hope. "Beware of the Car" celebrates this ability to enjoy petty bourgeois values—the car, friendship, constancy—as a promising new, controversial development."
