After The Aviator, which collected five Oscars, among which, however, there were no major awards, Scorsese proceeded to the third film with DiCaprio - The Departed , which brought together superstars on the set - Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin. The thriller about police academy graduates Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), who find themselves on opposite sides of the barricades, became a modified version of the 2002 Chinese trilogy “Double Castling.”
The characters are really like mirror projections of each other: DiCaprio’s hero is embedded in the mafia, and Damon’s character is at this time a “spy” for bandits in law enforcement. There is no point in retelling the entire plot of The Departed - almost every scene of the crime drama introduces unexpected changes. One has only to say that Martin Scorsese's version of the classic story about a good cop and a bad cop looks like the perfect crime thriller, where no detail is superfluous. American film critics could not help but admit this, and for the first time in his long career, they named Scorsese the best director of the year.
