Filming
After the release of the film, Gleb Zheglov and Volodya Sharapov became real idols of their era. At the same time, Vysotsky approached his work responsibly; he carefully found out from professional detectives the features of their profession.
It is interesting that Zheglov’s appearance was created in detail by costume designers who meticulously selected his costumes. His appearance was noticeably different from civilian clothes, in which boots, riding breeches and a cap played the main role. In contrast to the main character, Sharapov always wears a military uniform in the film.
Vysotsky added a lot to the plot of the picture from himself. For example, it was he who came up with the idea of hanging Varya’s photograph on the wall of the pantry, and even replaced Govorukhin in the director’s chair when he had to leave for the GDR for a while.

Character biography
Gleb Zheglov heads the department for combating banditry in the Moscow Criminal Investigation Department, in fact, he is an operational worker. It is interesting that Zheglov in the book and the film differs in age. If in the book he is about 25 years old, then in the film he is from 35 to 40.
Gleb Zheglov's rank is police captain. Vysotsky's character was born around 1905-1910, and the hero of the novel in 1919-1920.
Hero of the novel
According to the novel by the Weiner brothers, Gleb Zheglov is only a few years older than his partner Sharapov. He is described as an agile, tall, agile man with bulging brown eyes.
Gleb Zheglov constantly wears a parabellum; he does not part with a pistol even at night when he sleeps. Stores under the pillow. An important trait of a hero is narcissism. For example, Sharapov several times draws attention to the fact that Zheglov preens himself and does not spend the night at home.
He admits that as a child he grew up without a father; besides him, there were four children in the family. Apparently, he does not have a higher education; his quote on this matter is well known in response to Sharapov’s question about where and when he studied.

Audition for a role
Actor Vladimir Vysotsky was approved for the role of Gleb Zheglov almost immediately. Director Govorukhin even states that it was Vysotsky who brought him to the picture, and not vice versa. They had previously worked together on the film “Vertical”. Before this, it was assumed that the film would be directed by Alexei Batalov, who himself planned to play Zheglov.
According to legend, Vysotsky persuaded the Weiner brothers to rework their novel into a script, in which he himself really wanted to play the main character. According to Arkady Weiner, he simply fell in love with the book itself and the image of Zheglov.
