Natalia, you are an architect by training, why did you decide to become a stylist?
Higher education at an architectural institute opens up a wide variety of creative possibilities, and the work of a stylist is a derivative of the profession of “architect-designer.” It's no secret that interior design and clothing design go hand in hand and all global trends in High Fashion are closely related to interior trends. I also want to remind you that the best catwalk fashion designers came from... the walls of architectural universities. Yes, and I also want to remind you that you CAN turn from architects to stylists, but NEVER vice versa!
Still, is this more of a hobby or a business? I know that you give free, very valuable advice in a friendly manner.
You know, I will answer with the words of Confucius: “Find something you like and you will never have to work.” So in my life I had many different areas of business, and each time I returned to design and fine art. If I breathe this, then it doesn’t matter to me whether I’m choosing a wardrobe while walking around shopping centers, whether I’m writing articles or designing another interior. I need it like air. And money comes with people who need me.
Don't you think that women have begun to pay more attention to their appearance and turn to a stylist more often?
Stylists are not as in demand as the popularity of this profession is intensified in the media. And television played a big role in this. Personally, I don’t see a single more or less intelligent specialist either on TV or on the Internet.
You see, in our country, since 1917, the very concept of “fashion”, “couture”, “design” and “fine arts” have been trampled and burned with a hot iron. For 100 years in Russia, let alone stylists, there were not even designs as such. So, STUDY, STUDY and STUDY again, as bequeathed by the one who essentially destroyed this very design. What kind of fashion, design or style could we be talking about? And people don’t always understand the word “stylist” even today. I have been working as a stylist my entire adult life, say, since I was five years old. This was absorbed with my mother’s milk, I grew up in a creative family, I saw sewing, embroidering, drawing and designing every day, all family members. Since childhood, I have shunned everything proletarian, collective, herd, and egalitarianism has never been close to me. I always tried to find something pleasing to the eye, even in the meager Soviet assortment, then I began to create things myself. I often wondered, why do our women look so miserable? By the way, I ask this question today. Being a stylist is a calling for me. I will still go to stores, shopping centers, look at collections, and monitor pricing. This is for life. I do this all the time, even on vacation. I can't live without it.
Who turns to you for help?
Only the bravest ones come to me. Let me explain: only a brave and honest woman admits to herself that she has:
- meager wardrobe
- no taste
- she was poorly brought up (I mean a purely female upbringing, when the girl is taught good manners, etiquette and the ability to dress), and in our country there are 90 percent of such women. And, not surprisingly, the main readers of my articles about fashion and the main audience are men! I’m surprised myself, but facts are stubborn things!
How should a business woman dress? Should I limit myself to a jacket and a skirt?
Good question, I’ll correct it right away: in a woman’s wardrobe, even a business one, there are no jackets! There are jackets! A jacket is clothing for women; jackets are worn only by men.
Regarding business fashion, or rather, the dress code for office style, as we call it, I will say this: in our country, women do not have a basic education, culture, they do not understand what is appropriate and dignified to wear to work. Unfortunately, I observe this both among employees and among managers of Russian companies. There is no dress code in Russia! He is not here! And this is a clear set of rules: you cannot bare your arms, you cannot come to the office without tights (this applies even to the hottest months of the year). What do most office workers look like? These are boots (or street shoes), a knee-length pencil skirt, a “fun” sweater and, of course, a shawl! For what? And they sit like that all day! Why not go to a good store and choose a blouse, jacket, skirt, trousers, dress, which are tailored and thought out precisely so that in them a woman can not only form a decent opinion of herself, but also earn the money she claims?
I believe that much of the blame for this appearance of our office workers falls on the managers. They should have a stylist on staff and fire employees if they come to work in miniskirts, low-cut blouses, expose tattoos, wear fishnet tights and do not change into closed, replaceable shoes for the office.
I know that open-toed shoes are not welcome in the office, what other requirements for office shoes?
The business dress code requires medium-height heels, or business-style, office-style pumps, closed ones, in calm colors. And what depresses me most is this disgusting relic of the Soviet past: boots in the office, at a presentation, at a business lunch. Ladies, wear different shoes!
What are the taboos in business attire?
Taboos in business clothes: short skirts; neckline; tattoos for show; fishnet tights; open arms above the elbow; unnatural hair color; facial piercing; defiant makeup; beach elements in clothes; clothing made of transparent fabric through which underwear can be seen; stretch fabrics that have the effect of transparent clothing. If a lady shows off her thong and everyone sees it, it’s nonsense, it’s time to fire her.
Natalia, how to look stylish on a limited budget? And is it possible to create a basic wardrobe on your own?
Building a basic wardrobe is quite expensive. You need to start by cleaning out your wardrobe and throwing away all the things you bought at the clothing market in your city. Just like that - take it and throw it away! All! Of course, this does not apply to branded clothing: any items created by specialists are valuable. And they will still serve, if not you, then your friends, acquaintances, etc. Always look at the origin of things, where they came from, how you got them. If this item is couture, or made by a good tailor according to your individual measurements, it should also be left. Don’t rush to get rid of quality items with a good pedigree, even if they are too small or too big for you. Such things can either be altered or given to good friends, or you can create something useful out of them, “hand made” will help you. This is a Japanese tradition, like the Feng Shui philosophy, when a good thing is not thrown away, but given a second life.
Everyone’s basic wardrobe is individual and never listen to nonsense where “stylists” list the number of turtlenecks and little black dresses that you supposedly must have in your closet. It's a bullshit! Everyone has their own basic wardrobe. It is based on lifestyle, financial capabilities, and includes the goals that you set for yourself.
You probably notice how many women walk around with fake bags. What can you advise girls who like a Birkin bag: buy a fake one or a similar one, but from a different brand?
The Birkin must either be the real thing, bought at the HERMES boutique in the center of the European capital, or it cannot be in your wardrobe. Just by definition. And here there are no options.
Is it possible to have a thriving business and be happy in your personal life?
A woman in Russia is not obligated to engage in business, it is of no use, and besides, it is dangerous, unfair to her feminine nature, unnatural. Of course, if we are talking about real women. Business is the domain of strong men, and concepts such as “woman” and “strong” are simply incompatible.
Natalya, please describe the ideal woman
Ideal woman? I will describe the image that I am striving for. The ideal is when a woman fully embodies her feminine essence:
- She is BEAUTIFUL, whatever you want, you can understand whether she was born that way or made herself, but she is BEAUTIFUL! This is grooming, this is kindness, this is the finances that she invests in herself (conclude, these are all components of beauty).
- The ideal woman DOESN'T WORK! Doesn't go to work in the office (or anywhere else). She takes care of her house, children, husband and her own appearance. I see, right?
- The ideal woman always marries successfully. This “follows” from the two previous points. There must be a man nearby who works and earns A LOT in order to support a house, children and a beautiful woman.
- An ideal woman must cook deliciously, manage her own household, know how to sew, do creative work, understand fashion and know how to give pleasure to a man in bed, while also having fun.
- The ideal woman DOES NOT work, does NOT understand cars, does NOT swear, does NOT look bad, does NOT get up too early, does NOT do men's things.
