Dear chess lovers,
Many of the pages on my site, where you can view games on various topics or play against chess programs, use Java applets that have served you and me well for many years. However, in recent years, most modern browsers (MS Edge, Google Chrome, Opera) have stopped supporting Java applets, justifying this with security issues, which personally seems to me somewhat exaggerated. However, without these applets my site loses half of its appeal.
Here's what to do to solve this problem.
If you do not see a Java applet (a green chessboard with games or a board with pieces for playing with a computer) at the bottom of the page, download Mozilla Firefox (up to version 51!) and install it offline. Before this, your previous version, starting with Firefox 52, must be removed from your computer. After that, install it.
Starting with Firefox 52, Mozilla stopped supporting Java applets. Therefore, if you want to continue to enjoy the benefits of my site, you will need to download an older version of Firefox (before version 51) and disable automatic updating of Firefox offline. Automatic updating can be disabled offline here: Tools/Options/Advanced/Update (about:preferences#advanced). Then Firefox will never be updated and you will be able to always see Java applets on my page.
After you go to https://releases.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/, you need to find the version of Firefox that you want to download (for example, 50.0.1/). Clicking on the link will take you to the page. If you have Windows, then you need to select the win32/ link. By clicking on it, you will be taken to a page where you can select any language, including Russian. By clicking on ru/ you will be taken to the page. Click on the file “Firefox Setup 50.0.1.exe” (42M) and download Firefox to your computer. This will be the file for installing Firefox 50.0.1. By the way, the installation should be carried out offline, without the Internet. If you already had Firefox (for example, version 52), then you need to “cleanly” uninstall it before installing Firefox 50.0.1, otherwise nothing may work. "Purely" means via Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs. If you haven’t had Firefox before, you can start the installation right away. After which you can open Firefox offline and permanently disable it from performing independent Updates. Then you can connect to the Internet again.
In the Java Control Panel, which you can find in different places depending on the operating system (in Windows 8.1 / 10 JavaControllPanell can be found by clicking on Start in the list of programs) add my website https://www.grinis.de / (don't forget the slash at the end) to the list of Java exception sites. You can read how to do this here. To manage the list of exclusion sites, use the Security tab in the Java Control Panel. The list is displayed on this tab. To add a URL to the list (https://www.grinis.de/), change it, or remove it from the list, click Edit Site List.
Now you need to enable Java in the Firefox browser. Here's how to do it.
Now open Firefox and the page https://www.grinis.de, then go, for example, to page 475 of Steinitz games. If Firefox asks you to confirm whether it should show the supposedly "untrusted" app on my page, you'll need to confirm and you'll be able to see the checkerboard at the bottom of the page.
Since there are a large number of operating systems and browsers, please let me know if, despite the proposed solution, something does not work for you or, on the contrary, it works with browsers other than Firefox.
Internet Explorer 8 - 11 may even display Java better.
Meanwhile, I am trying to gradually create alternative pages for viewing chess games that can be seen without Java. True, there are only about 400 parties.
- Statistics show that... there are more positions in which the bishop is stronger (the knight) than vice versa, which means that there must be some decisive rationale against exchanging a bishop for a knight.
Conversely, exchanging a knight for a bishop is always profitable unless there are any clear reasons to the contrary. Max Euwe World Chess Champion 1935-1937 1901 - 1981 - Relative value of chess pieces.
This issue must be clearly understood. The information that I gave in this regard in the section for beginners is absolutely wrong for stronger chess players. The queen is not as strong as two rooks or three minor pieces. In principle, the pieces, all other things being equal, are stronger than the queen. Two rooks can attack any board point twice and are therefore superior to the queen. Only if the king of the side with two rooks stands precariously and is subject to many checks, the queen is stronger. The same applies even more to light figures. They must always be well protected by pawns. The unreliable position of the pieces in the fight against the queen leads in most cases to defeat. The rook, minor piece and passed pawn on the sixth (or third) rank are stronger than the queen. The exchange, the difference between a rook and a minor piece, is, according to my calculations, 1.5 pawns. Exactly the same difference between two minor pieces and a rook. A rook and two pawns are stronger than two minor pieces, namely by 0.5 pawns. This works more in the endgame, rather than in the opening and early stages of the middlegame, since then pawns in most cases do not play a very big role, while the importance of minor pieces is great. Two minor pieces are 0.5 pawns stronger than a rook and a pawn. It is especially clear to understand the relative value of the bishop and knight. They are by no means equivalent. In principle, the bishop is the stronger piece throughout the game. Only if the knight is located in the central part of the board, on verticals cf, from the fourth to the sixth (for black from the fifth to the third) horizontal, if possible protected by a pawn, it is superior to the bishop, because then it controls half of the board and is almost equal in strength to the rook. This is a very important thesis that I have established, which from the very beginning gives clarity and clarity to the entire figure game. The cost of minor pieces can, of course, be purely conventionally estimated at three pawns, but one must clearly understand that this estimate in a practical game is in most cases erroneous. The bishop in most cases has a value of more than three pawns, as does the knight in the opening and in the middle game. In this case, everything depends on the location of other pawns. If the pawns are not scattered and are on the same side of the board, if the pawns are already far advanced and connected, then they are often stronger, even than the bishop. Siegbert Tarrasch Grandmaster 1862 - 1934 - Never exchange a bishop for a knight unless some important consideration says otherwise.
Max Euwe World Chess Champion 1935-1937 1901 - 1981 - In principle, it is not profitable to exchange a bishop for a knight, but it is even worse to allow the enemy to exchange his knight for your “attacking” bishop.
Max Euwe World Chess Champion 1935-1937 1901 - 1981 - In the Nimzowitsch Defense, black must always be ready to exchange his king's bishop for white's queen's knight.
In theory, variations have been developed in which black either creates double pawns in the enemy camp or can seize the initiative. If Black does not understand the meaning of such compensation, then he will give White the advantage of two bishops for nothing, with all the ensuing unpleasant consequences.
