Basic varieties and genres of folklore

Traditional forms of folk art include epics, riddles, and sayings. Oral tradition, dances and songs are types of folklore. Ritual genres that have pagan roots and originated as a kind of opposition to Christianity deserve special attention. Of course, this was not always the case.

During the years of the Soviet Union, any cults were banned. During these times, Christian ritual folklore showed itself most clearly. Based on this, we can say that folk art is a reflection of the confrontation between the ordinary population and the authorities.

Works of folklore pass on to descendants the experience accumulated over thousands of years. Regardless of what stage of social development a people stands at, legends and epics are considered the most valuable sources of knowledge of their life and worldview.

The Russian darling of fate Ivanushka the Fool, the unearthly beauty Vasilisa, the evil Koschey the Immortal, the Greek heroes Hercules and Prometheus, the German Freya and other magical creatures can “tell” a lot about what happened on earth in ancient times.

Russian folklore and its role in the mental development of children

A child’s mental development occurs in everyday life, during communication with adults, and in games with peers.

Preschool childhood is the optimal period in human mental development. A number of psychological studies have found that the rate of mental development of preschool children is very high compared to later age periods.

Folklore is of great importance in the mental development of children. M. Gorky, K. Chukovsky, S. Marshak passionately spoke out in defense of folklore. The idea of using folk culture in preschool education was actively supported by such teachers as Flerina, Usova, Tikheyeva, Vodovozova.

Folklore is folk art, art created by the people and existing among the broad masses.

Folklore works exist hundreds and thousands of years ago in oral form. The oldest of them arose long before the advent of writing.

“The Russian people have created a huge amount of oral literature: wise proverbs and cunning riddles, funny and sad ritual songs, solemn epics - spoken in a chant, to the sound of strings - about the glorious exploits of heroes, defenders of the people’s land - heroic, magical, everyday and funny tales. It is vain to think that this literature was only the fruit of popular leisure. She was the dignity and intelligence of the people. She formed and strengthened his moral character, was his historical memory, the festive clothes of his soul and filled with deep content his entire measured life, flowing according to the customs and rituals associated with his work, nature and the veneration of his fathers and grandfathers,” said the Russian teacher and writer A. N. Tolstoy.

K. D. Ushinsky wrote: “A child does not only learn conventional sounds; by studying his native language, he drinks spiritual life and strength from the native breast of his native word. It explains nature to him as no natural scientist could explain it; it acquaints him with the character of the people around him, with the society among which he lives, with its history and aspirations, as no historian could have acquainted him; it introduces it into popular beliefs, into folk poetry, as no esthetician could introduce it; it finally gives such logical concepts and philosophical views that, of course, no philosopher could convey to a child.”

The most important educational means of mental development are various forms of oral folk art.

Russian folk art expresses the people's understanding of the individual, society, and state, and reveals their social and everyday views.

“The beginning of the art of words is in folklore,” said M. Gorky

Folklore provides excellent examples of Russian speech, imitation of which allows a child to more successfully master his native language, and therefore contributes to the development of mental abilities.

The term "mind" is often used as a synonym for "thinking faculty." To have intelligence, to be smart, means to be capable. One of the important foundations of ability is the acquisition of knowledge.

In the minds of the people, the concept of “ability” is considered as one of the inherent qualities of the human personality, as evidenced by the meaningfulness of the word.

In the early stages of a nation’s development, the priority of physical development is indisputable, hence the requirements for the heroes of epics and fairy tales, who must have incredible physical strength.

Later, the requirements for gifted individuals took on a slightly different direction. Instead of brute physical strength, mental ability took first place: “The strong will defeat one, and the smart will defeat ten.”

The role of knowledge in people’s lives is gradually increasing: “A person without knowledge is blind,” “Knowledge is more valuable than wealth,” “A knowledgeable person will not be lost.” People striving for knowledge and learning have always been respected: “Gold is not wealth, but knowledge”, “Do not grow in length, but develop in mind.”

The riddles are smart, highly poetic, and many carry a moral message. Accordingly, they influence mental, aesthetic and moral education. In ancient times they probably performed all these functions more or less equally. But later, mental education became the dominant principle in them.

They develop ingenuity, memory, speed of thinking, logic, ingenuity and intelligence. But the significance of riddles in mental education is far from being limited to the development of thinking; they also enrich the mind with information about nature and knowledge from various areas of human life. The use of riddles in mental education is valuable because the totality of information about nature and human society is acquired by the child in the process of active mental activity. The content of riddles always reflects human life and the phenomena of the surrounding reality. They help the child see the world in its diverse connections. Guessing riddles influences the development of children's speech, develops the ability to analyze, generalize, forms the ability to independently draw conclusions, the ability to clearly identify the most characteristic features of an object, phenomenon, vividly and concisely convey images of objects, and develops a poetic view of reality in children.

In addition to riddles, mental education means include tongue twisters, teasers, games with theatrical elements, and outdoor games that obey certain rules.

Proverbs and sayings are created by the entire people, therefore they express their collective opinion. It contains a popular assessment of life, an observation of the people's mind.

Proverbs remain firmly in memory. The ultimate goal of the proverb has always been education, which has acted as a pedagogical means since ancient times. On the one hand, they contain a pedagogical idea, on the other, they have an educational effect.

Proverbs and sayings are figurative, poetic, endowed with comparisons, vivid epithets, they contain a lot of personifications and small definitions.

Songs, like proverbs, are invaluable in the mental education of the younger generation: on the one hand, they call for mastering the rich intellectual experience of workers, and on the other, they provide material for thought, reflection, and enrich the memory with information about the surrounding reality.

A nursery rhyme helps a child “discover” himself. A folklore work designed to address a child by name affirms his personality, respect for him, and recognition of his uniqueness and originality. The nursery rhyme says that a child is the highest value for an adult. Playing a nursery rhyme with a child’s name encourages him to think deeply about the content.

Small folklore works are an amazing expectation of joy, a bright perception of an adult, an expectation of goodness. The simplicity of small folklore forms has nothing in common with simplification. They contain wisdom, which manifests itself in the ability to solve complex problems using simple means.

Fairy tales are intended to systematize the pedagogical roles of riddles, proverbs and songs. K. D. Ushinsky called the fairy tales of the Russian people the first brilliant attempts at folk pedagogy. According to Ushinsky, natural Russian teachers - grandmother, mother, grandfather, who never leaves the stove, understood instinctively and knew from experience what enormous educational power a folk tale conceals. As is known, Ushinsky’s pedagogical ideal was a harmonious combination of mental and moral-aesthetic development. According to the firm conviction of the great Russian teacher, this task can be successfully completed if the material of folk tales is widely used in education. Ushinsky developed in detail the question of the pedagogical significance of fairy tales and their psychological impact on the child; he resolutely placed the folk tale above stories published in educational literature specifically for children.

The variety of poetic forms and the content of songs, fairy tales, riddles and proverbs indicates that folk pedagogy, while defining the traits of a perfect personality, at the same time showed concern for the realization of the ideal of a perfect person.

Folklore develops a child’s oral speech, influences his spiritual development and his imagination. Each genre of children's folklore influences the child's mental development.

An epic epic is a heroic narrative about events that took place in ancient times. Song lyrics are used when the child is still very young. Song lyrics include ditties, jokes, pesters, tongue twisters, and counting rhymes. All of them are aimed at developing children’s speech, hearing, attention, and therefore have a direct impact on mental education.

Thus, a child’s introduction to folk culture begins in early childhood, where basic concepts and examples of behavior are laid down. Cultural heritage is passed on from generation to generation, developing and enriching the child’s world. Folklore is a unique means for transmitting folk wisdom, developing and educating a child at the initial stage of his development, and mental education.

It is not simple

Creativity can be created in many ways, but at its core there will certainly be something personal. Mysterious aspirations and desires, protest against everyday life, words that will never be spoken. And the one who says that creating is easy is wrong. In fact, as Baurzhan Toyshibekov said: “Creativity is created from one portion of ink and three portions of sweat.” To create something outstanding, you need to put in maximum effort every day. Constantly develop and work on yourself.

The difficulties in creating works of art are best described by quotes about the work of famous philosophers:

Literature and folklore

What is the difference between these cultural trends? The first is characterized by a system of constructing works. The main difference between folklore and literature is that its work contains starters, beginnings, sayings, and trinity.

Folk works also use epithets, hyperboles, and there is tautology (the basic principle of storytelling). Literature is represented by such genres as novels, short stories, stories. They are written in calm tones, which allows the reader to analyze the plot component and draw conclusions.

However, literature also contains folklore genres: epic, lyricism and drama. The first is based on historical works in song form. The epic is distinguished by its extensive subject matter, when guslar players can narrate for hours about the history of Rus' under the quiet plucking of strings.

Drama includes fairy-tale stories with unfavorable developments and a happy ending. Most often this is a legend in which good fights evil. The hero fights with varying degrees of success, but in the end the positive character wins.

Lyrics include ritual creativity: love songs, ditties, lamentations. Much in these works depends on the intonation with which they are pronounced.

Sayings of Great People About Folklore

A collection of quotes on the topic of folklore.

“People’s folklore is glorified on the roadside.”

— Mikhail Safarbekovich Gutseriev Russian entrepreneur, philanthropist 1958

“The Bible is a collection of scattered historical stories and folklore of an ancient people. It is no more inspired than the writings of Marcus Aurelius and other great men.”

“Russians, if you read folklore, have always wanted to get everything at once and a lot, and not have to work. Russian fairy tales are, unfortunately, a national idea. A mentality that, to put it mildly, does not evoke sympathy. The best people in Russia always exist in spite of him.”

- Eldar Ryazanov Soviet and Russian film director, screenwriter, actor, teacher, TV presenter, writer, poet, playwright, producer 1927 - 2015

“We live in a cultural environment where phallic-anal penetration is a basic symbol of social dominance and victory. This criminal symbolism has penetrated folklore and psychology and literally permeated cultural codes, so homosexual images in the mass consciousness are more a reflection of the assholery of social relations than a projection of the erotic composition of the mind. The paradox is that this state of mind coexists with the removal of all taboos on homosexuality. This creates a wild and explosive cultural cocktail.”

Interview, 2003, “There is nothing sweeter than giving people freedom”

“Although my poems largely come from folklore, I have not specifically studied any folklore. The chanting style of my poems is the result of my peasant origin. It is known that our Russian villagers have always been great singers and dancers. This property of my dear relatives passed on to my muse.”

- Nikolai Ivanovich Tryapkin Russian Soviet poet 1918 - 1999

From the preface to the collection “Poems”, 1989. Source: [Tryapkin N. I., About myself, Tryapkin N. I. Poems, M., 1989, 8]

“I love gnomes. They are reliable, solid, and stand firmly on their feet. Traits that many of us lack. They differ from those from Western European folklore. Rather, they were copied from Russian men. True, they have been ennobled. But, both in Western Europe and here, they will not miss the opportunity to drink beer. With my help, it became the national dwarf drink. I would like to see more gnomes in my life.”

— Nick Perumov Russian science fiction writer 1963

The life of a creator in exile

As Remarque said, creativity is always hidden under an unprepossessing shell. On the pages of history it is not often possible to meet a creative person who was always first in everything, lived a long and happy life, loved and was loved. Often, creators were betrayed more than once, expelled from their native country, not recognized during life, but praised after death. But they never gave up creating their works.

Once I asked a rhetorical question: “Why do kind, decent, creative people always give in to the gray masses?” It has always been and will be: creators are innovators. But everything new brings with it changes that are inconvenient and irritating, and therefore unacceptable at a certain time. Aphorisms about creativity can say a lot about how different types of art are born in such harsh conditions: from music to folk art.

Development of folklore

Folk beliefs of national cultures are diverse. Some animals, for example, are considered a bad sign in various regions of the globe. And in other countries these same animals symbolize success.

Folk art is diverse, but at the same time unites the natural uniqueness of the landscape, be it endless snowy winters in Scandinavia or long sunny days at the equator. Folklore often depicts unique things about the people of a particular culture.

Oral creativity is constantly changing. Since history is cyclical and often repeats itself, people tend to embellish events or supplement them with their own thoughts. In some cases, the content of folklore has undergone significant changes to suit new times.

As a result, folk art represents an ever-expanding and changing material, providing employment to a huge number of people who are interested in the oral traditions of a particular culture.

A number of scientists note a change in folklore as part of a large-scale study of the traditions of the people. They saw that oral creativity acquired new colors if representatives of one nation united with bearers of other cultural values.

When the study of folklore became more formal and became a separate discipline, people began to write down fairy tales. Although, for example, the Brothers Grimm long before this time recorded folk art on paper.

Some museums still contain unique collections of objects and stories about their origins. Perhaps, even in your grandmother’s house, you will find examples of folklore written down by hand. Return to contents

“Folklore is life itself”

Choirmaster Nadezhda Yablokova from the Tambov region became the winner of the A.V. Lunacharsky in the category “Best Worker of a Cultural and Leisure Institution.” The prize is awarded annually to employees of museums, theaters, libraries and other cultural institutions within the framework of the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum, which this year will be held from November 15 to 17. She told the Kultura.RF portal about what her work is, whether folk song has a future and why nepotism is so important in this profession.

Choirmaster Nadezhda Yablokova

— Nadezhda Vladimirovna, the profession of choirmaster sounds a little mysterious to an unprepared person. What do you mean by this concept?

— For me, a choirmaster is a profession that reflects my essence, and is not just an entry in a work book. Formally, I lead a choir, even two. But my main goal is to attract people to folk singing, to immerse them in folk art, polished over centuries. I believe that this genre combines the best that our people have, it is accessible to everyone and, moreover, is capable of uniting people of completely different generations.

— Do you think this is possible today?

- You know, yes. According to my feelings, right now there is a fairly noticeable revival of the creative potential of the Russian people. Some kind of inner freedom appeared, if you like. We often attend all-Russian events - and I notice how many new creative teams have appeared. Moreover, we are not talking only about music - many people began to engage in arts and crafts and folk crafts. And in general, there are much more people going to festivals. We recently hosted the Atmanovsky Fists festival - it has been included in the Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of Russia since 2014. So, despite the fact that the village of Atmanovsky Ugol, where this festival takes place, is a place quite remote from the regional center, there you could meet participants and spectators from Voronezh, Moscow, Lipetsk - even people from Italy came up to us to take pictures! It turned out to be a very interesting festival - you could watch fist fights, take part in a competition of ditties, dancers, accordion players, and play traditional games. Well, listen to folk singing, of course. Everyone got to know each other, became friends, our “Bee” was immediately invited to another festival - this time in Yelets.

Folk choir "Slavyanka"

— In addition to the children’s “Bee,” you also direct the adult choir “Slavyanka.” How do you manage everything?

“I’m just lucky, I’m a happy person.” Since childhood, I felt what my calling was, where I felt good. My sister also studied at a music school. My parents realized that I, too, could not do without music. Already in secondary school, I knew that I would enter a music school, from the age of five I studied in a choir studio, and then in a music school. When, after the tenth grade, I ended up at the Tambov Music College, my teacher immediately advised me to go to choral conducting - they say, there you will learn to sing, play the piano, and you will know music theory well. Twenty years after graduating from college, I entered and graduated from the Tambov State Musical Pedagogical Institute named after S.V. Rachmaninov with a degree in academic choir conductor. I have always been lucky with my teachers; they were wonderful people and highly qualified masters of their craft. I studied with Anatoly Petrovich Khvorostov, Tamara Vladimirovna Zweigart, Ivan Anatolyevich Serkov, Vladimir Vasilyevich Kozlyakov, who is the director and creator of the Tambov Chamber Choir named after S.V. Rachmaninov. I always studied and worked with great pleasure, so, most likely, I managed to do everything.

— The desire to connect your life with folk music also from childhood?

- No, it was just a surprise. After graduating from music school in 1988, I had a free placement and went to Siberia. At that moment, it was not possible to get a job at a music school; the only option was to go to the regional House of Culture and accept work with the choir group, since it was left without a leader. I immersed myself in work, selected my own repertoire, and worked with the team. Then she and her family returned to the Tambov region in the city of Rasskazovo. Here, in my husband’s homeland, a job was found for me in the village of Platonovka, where I independently created the folk choir “Slavyanka”. For more than twenty years I have been with this group, we perform our favorite folk songs, works by Russian and Soviet composers - Pakhmutova, Zakharchenko, Zavolokin. And in 2002, I came very close to folklore - I organized the children’s folklore group “Bee”.

Quotes from people about folk wisdom in unt. Essay on the topic: “Russian oral folk art”

However, writers retell them in their own way to make the works easy to read and understand.
Currently, many collections have been published that include one or several genres of Russian folklore. These are, for example, “Epics” by L. N. Tolstoy, “Russian folk poetry” by T. M. Akimova, “Russian folklore” edited by V. P. Anikin, “Russian ritual songs” by Yu. G. Kruglov, “Strings of Rumble: Essays on Russian Folklore” by V. I. Kalugin, “Russian Soviet Folklore” edited by K. N. Femenkov, “On Russian Folklore” by E. V. Pomerantseva, “Folk Russian Legends” and “People-Artist: myth, folklore, literature” by A. N. Afanasyev, “Slavic mythology” by N. I. Kostomarov, “Myths and legends” by K. A. Zurabov. Since the people are a whole collective, there are no specific authors for all these works. Any song, any fairy tale, any toy reflecting folk traditions - everything acquired its appearance through common efforts, with the help of folk fantasies and wisdom, became traditional, passed on from mouth to mouth, from generation to generation. That is why today we have such a rich folklore heritage, which, perhaps, no other people in the world has. And a people without folklore is a faceless people. Folklore is the memory of centuries, it is the treasure of ancestors, it is the face of the people, the nation, it is real wealth that has no price, it cannot be assessed and measured.

Folklore is not just a cultural value, it is a strong chain that binds together not only individual human races, passing from the generation of fathers to the generation of children and grandchildren, it is a chain that connects generations of the people. By telling fairy tales, epics, singing folk songs, parents pass on information, culture, experience to their child, thereby instilling in him patriotic feelings, pride in his people and love for him, for his homeland.

In folk tales and songs there is always a moral that any member of society must live up to. Folklore heroes are hardworking, brave, wise, noble, respectful to elders and parents, help the poor and unfortunate, and protect their land from enemies encroaching on it. Any folklore is very symbolic.

All the wisdom contained in folklore works, be it a fairy tale, a song or a handicraft product, is transmitted to readers and listeners in symbolic form. In folk art, all everyday and natural objects carry a symbolic meaning.

For example, a dove, an eagle, and a drake have long been considered symbols of a good fellow in Rus'. And the beautiful maiden always lived in a dove, duck, and swan. Of the trees, oak has always been considered a symbol of strength and wisdom, and birch and willow are symbols of tenderness and femininity. Precious metals, gold and silver, signified nobility and wealth. And thus, folklore teaches a person to think.

After all, behind all these symbols you need to be able to see and discern the hidden wisdom, the hidden meaning. A person who has learned to correctly read the symbolism of folklore will be wise, life truths for happiness will be revealed to him. If you collect all the folklore works, you can see behind them not just the wisdom of the people, but their soul, self-awareness.

Folklore can rightfully be placed at the head of all world culture. After all, its roots go deep into folk art. Folklore feeds painting, music, and literature with its wisdom. Without it, without folklore, the existence of not a single people, not a single nation is possible.

All spheres of life of our ancestors found their original reflection in folklore. That is why oral folk art has such a rich genre diversity. These are signs, riddles, everyone’s favorite proverbs and sayings, fairy tales and superstitious stories, jokes and anecdotes, lullabies and ditties, ballads and epics, traditions and legends, historical and lyrical songs, family and calendar ritual poetry and even entire dramatic works. Each genre has its own unique characteristics and traditionally verified way of expression and transmission. Many genre types of folklore include elements of theatricality and involve exclusively live performance, which fills them with new colors and enriches them with the soulfulness of each performer in particular and the subsequent generation in general. But at the same time, the main idea, the leading concept, the generally accepted moral and instructive core, and the aesthetic design remain unchanged. All this is possible thanks to the strong and inextricable connection of oral creativity with centuries-old traditions.

Folk wisdom in works of oral folk art immerses us in the spiritual culture of our previous generations.

Oral folk art arose in ancient times. Everyone knows folk songs, fairy tales, and riddles. In ancient times there was no written language, and each person told his own fairy tale or epic.

Thus, the people became the creator of all songs and epics. All the wisdom of the people was conveyed in songs and fairy tales. People noticed that the song was more fun to work with. And the songs changed, rhythm appeared in them. With song it was easier to cultivate the land and cut down the forest. Primitive people believed in various spirits and gods in the forces of nature. They composed songs glorifying them. In fairy tales, people talked about their work, about some historical events. Fairy tales teach children to be honest, hardworking, and courageous. Fairy tales provide an answer to a simple question: “What is good and evil? »

Proverbs and sayings reflect people's life experiences. In Russian proverbs you can understand how and what a person lives with, for example: “Curl your curls and don’t forget about your business” “You can face this way and that, but you can’t go anywhere with your business.”

Labor occupied a huge place in the lives of our ancestors. And in our time these proverbs are very relevant. After all, they carry a great educational charge within themselves. Here are proverbs about the Motherland:

Proverbs speak about the value of our land, educate and inspire us: “If you die from your native land, do not leave.” “Alone in the field is not a warrior.” "Cheek brings success".

Folk wisdom in works of oral folk art (these traditionally include epics, fairy tales, sayings, riddles, proverbs, songs) constitute a treasury of folk artistic culture, thereby representing an interesting source of knowledge of the native language and folk life.

Essay on a work on the topic: Oral folk art

Thanks to the long path of historical development, folklore has reflected the most diverse aspects of the life of the people; folklore is distinguished by its genre richness and diversity. These are proverbs and sayings, riddles and fairy tales, calendar and family ritual poetry, epics, legends, traditions, as well as ballads, historical and lyrical songs, dramatic works, ditties, children's folklore.

In addition to general genres, such as fairy tales, riddles, proverbs, the folklore of each nation has only its own varieties. Thus, only in Ukrainian folk art there are Kolomyykas and Dumas, but there are no ditties and epics characteristic of Russian folklore.

Folk art

Russian creators also brought a lot to the world. Russian creativity is distinguished by its originality and dissimilarity from the creations of foreign geniuses. And for this, their works are respected and perceived as a unique heritage of the Russian people, which reflects culture, mentality, basic life values and priorities. As Fadeev said: “A person manifests himself best through work and creativity.” And in a society where there are people with a desire to improve themselves, sooner or later such a simple phenomenon as folk art will appear. Quotes about folk art have never taken a leading position in terms of quantity, but nevertheless, several apt statements can be found:

Who studies folklore?

Folk art is a reflection of culture. Our country is characterized by a harmonious fusion of pagan and Orthodox points of view on phenomena in the environment and society. In folklore works, animals and natural forces (wind, sun) often become the main characters.

This reflects a reflection of the pagan worldview that spiritualizes nature. The ancient Slavs believed in mythical creatures and prayed to them, this is also evident in ancient legends.

In addition, there are Christian characters in the works (Virgin Mary, saints). Folklorists study folk art. They regularly go on expeditions to find and record oral works of art that have survived to this day. After this, scientists carefully examine the symbolism of the tales, their content and structure.
