"Suicide Squad": The Joker is terrible, different
First photo of Jared Leto as the Joker from the upcoming Suicide Squad
", published by director David Ayer, stirred up a hive of angry conservative fans and poured a gallon of gasoline on the fire of controversy over what a real killer clown should be. Here and there an angry “Not canon!”, “Why does the Joker look like a criminal?!”, “Ledger is better!”, “He shouldn’t be like that!” is heard.
For some reason, everyone forgets that the character is already seventy-five years old, and during this time he has changed both his appearance and character more than once, sometimes in the most radical way. So he doesn’t owe anyone anything!
Official inspiration for both the upcoming film Batman v Superman
”, and for “
Suicide Squad
” the cult graphic novel by Frank Miller “
The Dark Knight Returns
”, which tells about the adventures of a fairly aged Bruce Wayne, is named.
► The comic has a fairly accurate animated film adaptation in two parts.
We strongly advise you to join. Miller's Joker, it must be said, is very peculiar. He smokes manneredly, wears a white suit, wears lipstick, and addresses Batman only as “dear” and “sweet.” The final duel between sworn enemies (are they enemies?) generally takes place in the tunnel of love.
Moreover, when it comes to cruelty, Miller's version of the clown will give a hundred points ahead of any other. No more puns or themed heists. This Joker, without blinking an eye, gasses two hundred people at a time, beats women and does not hesitate to take a child hostage.
Despite claims of a connection to Miller's work, the photo evokes much more associations with Grant Morrison's Joker from the Batman arc RIP
.
Morrison tried to make the killer buffoon scary again (this was a problem in the 2000s), and his version of the Joker is more reminiscent of a horror villain than a superhero epic. A kind of pumped-up Hannibal Lecter. Instead of the usual gadgets like a rose-plate with acid, the Joker is equipped with a pair of razors, and instead of a suit he wears medical gloves and a butcher's apron. And he has a special relationship with pain. Not only does he survive being shot in the head, but he is also able to cut his own tongue in two without interrupting a conversation. Brr.
Further more. Joker from The New 52
finally goes into some kind of “
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
”. First, he allows the psychopathic surgeon Dollmaker to cut off his face to leave it as a parting gift to the Gotham police, and after some time he steals a fairly deteriorated mug from the evidence warehouse to wear as a mask.
Screenwriter Scott Snyder went perhaps further than anyone else in expressing the twisted and rotten nature of the Joker through his appearance. Wet flesh is visible from under the rotting mask face; it is clear that the author, like Frank Miller, likes to speculate on the topic of Mr. Jay's uncertain sexual orientation. The overall femininity of the figure is combined with an even greater, compared to The Dark Knight Returns, mannerism of poses and speeches. The psychopath seems to be flirting with Batman, but that doesn't make him any less sinister. Imagine that such a monster is attracted to you
!
Many praises have already been sung to the ideological anarchist terrorist from Christopher Nolan’s film. About the flurry of aggression that poured out onto the Internet before the premiere of The Dark Knight
", everyone somehow forgot.
At first, everyone lamented in unison that Heath Ledger was too cute to play the villain, then they recalled his role in Brokeback Mountain
. And when the first photo appeared in the image, everyone simultaneously turned up their noses. And then the young actor died, but the film was released some time after the tragedy.
And then a new Joker came onto the scene.
Ledger didn't base his character on the classic comic book psychopathic clown; rather, he was inspired by it. The actor borrowed his movements and gait from Sid Vicious from the Sex Pistols, and his mannerisms from Alex from A Clockwork Orange
» Stanley Kubrick. The resulting character, the result of painstaking acting and directing work, has been awarded by many critics the title of the most influential and dangerous villain in popular culture in recent decades.
Young people see Ledger's Joker as a romantic rebel, a fighter against the system, a kind of Tyler Durden of the new time. But monologues about chaos and anarchy are just a cover, a trick for naive minds. Do not be deceived: there is a serial and mass murderer on the screen. And the bloody stunt of a copycat who shot twelve people at the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises
”, such a Joker would be pleased.
Another outstanding work by Grant Morrison, illustrated by Dave McKean, perhaps the most original and original artist in the comics industry. It was this graphic novel that made the greatest impression on Ledger while working on the role.
In the pages of this comic (if you can even call it that), Bruce Wayne will experience a surreal immersion into the sick and twisted world of Arkham Asylum. And the guard at the entrance to this kingdom of nightmares and hallucinations, of course, is the Joker.
McKean retained a more or less human appearance for the other heroes, but not the clown. Although he doesn't look much like a clown here. This is the Boogeyman, a demon from the far reaches of hell. He does not commit any outstanding atrocities during the course of the story, but, as befits a demon, he sows doubts in Batman’s soul. Isn't there a place for him here, in a mental hospital?
Well-known among Batman fans, the graphic novel by Jeph Loeb remains almost the standard comic book about the big-eared knight. First of all, this is an excellent detective story with a couple of truly unexpected plot twists, dynamic action and a solid dose of drama.
The Joker in this story is a supporting character, but he is remembered for a long time. Like Dave McKean, Tim Sale decided to emphasize in his drawing the inhuman nature of the killer clown, and therefore instead of a mouth he has a monstrous mouth full of long, crooked teeth. Creepy, impressive, but still the question arises: how is this creature
talking?
This work by Brian Azzarello is clearly inspired by Nolan's film. The Joker in the comics looks exactly like Ledger's, although here he still bathed in chemicals.
But this is still a different character. Joker Azzarello is a very rationally thinking gangster for whom such concepts as territory and authority matter. However, he is not at all averse to killing an elderly couple or skinning a living person for fun. The screenwriter decided to add depth to the villain in a very straightforward manner. In one scene, the Joker secretly cries in the arms of his silent bodyguard Harley Quinn. In the twenty-first century, a scoundrel is supposed to be sensitive, and there’s no way around it these days.
This is what happens when you strip the Joker of his madness, as screenwriter A. J. Lieberman did in the Strike Back arc (#50-55).
In his Jay, all that remained of the clown was his appearance. He grieves for his dead wife, behaves like an average crime boss, and never even bursts into evil laughter. He’s a common criminal, and it’s completely unclear why Batman has been bothering with him for so many years. It's boring.
Mom dear!
In the DC universe, as we know, there are dozens of parallel worlds and dimensions, and almost every one has its own Joker. Joker the wizard, Joker the pirate, Joker the hero, Joker - Jack the Ripper. You can’t remember them all. But the most original version is probably the version from the global Flashpoint
. Here the Joker becomes... Martha Wayne!
In this alternate dimension, it is not the Wayne couple who die, but their son, after which Thomas Wayne dons the Batman costume, and Bruce's mother, distraught with grief, hides under the guise of an evil clown. A truly tragic and creepy image.
The creators of the 2004 animated series took a rather bold approach to the image of the merry criminal. They sensibly decided that it was useless to compete with the Joker in the brilliant performance of Mark Hamill from the cult cartoon of the nineties, and therefore it was necessary to move in a different direction.
The updated Jay looks like a monkey. He moves similarly, has a luxurious tousled mane and basically does not wear shoes. He doesn’t even put on his classic tailcoat right away, preferring a torn straitjacket to a suit. But now he fights on equal terms with Batman in hand-to-hand combat, constantly jumping and rolling. And the Joker is voiced by black Kevin Michael Richardson, which adds unusual “street” notes to the clown’s voice.
► In the feature film “ Batman vs. Dracula”
"The Joker also becomes a vampire. As if just a crazy clown isn't creepy enough.
Each author and performer finds something of their own in the Joker, attractive or frightening. The old man is already seventy-five, but he doesn’t even think about retiring, no matter how many times he is killed in comics, films and games. He's such a tenacious bastard. So if you don't like Jared Leto's new Joker, don't worry - he won't be the last.
Harley Quinn - the crazy charmer from the movie "Suicide Squad"
Harley Quinn is probably the brightest character from Suicide Squad, although she is the weakest in terms of fighting qualities (like Boomerang).
A former psychiatrist fell in love with the Joker (while studying him in a prison mental hospital) and jumped into a vat of chemicals to show her feelings. After that, from an intelligent, modest girl, she turned into a cheeky, sexy, constantly laughing psychopath and became the Joker's lover and partner. After several crimes, she was caught by Batman and put in a prison for especially dangerous criminals.
In the film, Harley Quinn turned out to be an absolutely crazy, charming, cheerful and simply cool blonde girl (although in the first third of the film her constant laughter was annoying). She masterfully wielded a baseball bat and a pistol, and was also an excellent acrobat.
Her appearance and outfit are indicated by the scene in which she put on her battle suit. All the men around froze and only after she turned around did they continue their movement.
Despite her lack of “superpowers,” Harley played a key role in the film by cutting out the witch’s heart. We also note that Harvey's charm (and her love for strong, frostbitten men) helped make the squad more united and awakened the humanity in Deadshot. In general, it’s funny that the girl is not at all afraid of the other members of the squad and constantly makes fun of them.
By the way, it’s not clear why the Joker is shown in the film? He did not save Harley, did not interfere with the squad and did not help. True, in the end he got her out of prison, but by this time the film had already ended.
