Quiet horror. Stephen King on Love, Death and George W. Bush

Tests

In 1999, the married couple suffered another test. Stephen decided to go for a walk and was hit by a car. The writer was taken to a Maine hospital, where doctors diagnosed numerous spinal fractures, a femoral neck fracture, rib fractures, and cut wounds to the head. For the man, the situation became a real test.

Stephen suffered incredibly from pain, he could not engage in writing in this state, and this depressed him most of all. King simply could not help but work. And again Tabitha came to the aid of her beloved husband. The woman did absolutely everything so that Stephen could write. She was with him around the clock and eventually helped her husband get back on his feet.

First success

Soon one of the publishing houses bought the novel “Carrie”, paying 400 thousand dollars. Upon learning of this, Tabitha began to cry. From then on, their family no longer needed money. Stephen managed to sign a contract with a publishing house, and he began to write full-time.

King worked hard to keep up the pace; he became addicted to drugs, which he mixed with alcohol. The wife saw that her husband was dying, she fought his addictions with all her might. One day she collected all the bottles and poured them out in front of Stephen. This forced the man to come to his senses and begin to fight abnormal addictions.

Family life

In 1971, the first-born appeared in the family. The baby was named Naomi. The young couple was in dire need of money. In order to somehow earn money, English teacher Stephen got a job in a laundry. But he did not stay there for long, as he was soon offered a place at the school. The family moved to a small town, where they lived in an ordinary trailer. The couple saved on absolutely everything. Tabitha also worked part-time when possible. Stephen worked at school, and in the evenings he and Tabitha wrote. They had a typewriter at their disposal, thanks to which King’s first novel was born. Tabitha wrote books for children, poetry and novels.

In 1972, the couple had another child. The son was named Joseph. And five years later, the couple had a son, Owen. Stephen regularly submitted his manuscripts to various printed publications, but he was refused publication with enviable regularity. One day, Tabitha found the manuscript of the novel “Carrie” in the trash can. She immediately told her husband that the book would be a real masterpiece. Stephen did not believe this, but decided to continue working on the novel. And after some time he received his first fee, which amounted to 2.5 thousand dollars. Thanks to this money, the couple were able to move into a normal apartment.

Wedding

The Spruce family was not happy with such a groom for their daughter. Just look at the appearance of a young man who was into rock music at that time. Stephen's obvious poverty did him no favors in the eyes of Tabitha's parents. The young man was working part-time at that time, but there was not enough money for anything. He had two pairs of pants, boots and two pairs of underwear, as well as a large student loan. When the couple decided to get married, they didn't even have money for the wedding.

In 1971, young people went to buy rings. Arriving at the store, they asked for a pair of the cheapest wedding rings. The seller offered them jewelry for $15. Soon the couple got married. Steven was wearing someone else's suit, and Tabitha was wearing a blue pantsuit that had previously been a groomsman's outfit for a friend's wedding.

Stephen and his witness arrived at the wedding ceremony drunk, which greatly angered the bride's relatives. But this did not push Tabitha away from the young man. She always treated Stephen with understanding.

The best works of the king of horrors

No. 3. Pet cemetery

Also a very cool piece from the king of horror. It seems that at first everything seems calm and prosperous, but then it becomes scary, especially because of thoughts about the walking dead, especially when the father digs up the remains of his son in order to rebury them on another, mysterious and enigmatic one.

Spoiler: don't expect a happy ending - everyone will die in the end.

Here are a couple of reviews of the book (taken from here):

1. I hope that someday Stephen King’s books will be included in the list of required reading... Perhaps in none of his works does this theme sound so dramatic and poignant - how far a person can go, trying to return what was dear, and how much he I agree to pay for it. As it turns out, dangerously close to everyday life, the abyss of evil yawns. But the choice has been made. “The soil of a man’s heart is rocky. And the man grows on it what he can and cherishes it.” One of the most exciting and powerful books by Stephen King is a must read. podlesnova

2. And for some reason this book makes me feel creepy. It’s not scary, it’s just creepy, I can’t explain it in any way, but when the revived cat looked at people with its dead eyes, shivers ran down my spine. I was just waiting for this unpredictable creature to grab hold of one of the heroes. In general, the book is so tense, the expectation of something terrible is hanging in the air. One of the best, in my opinion, novels by the author. ironsh

No. 2. Under the dome

I read it a long time ago. I don't remember half the plot already.

I remember the city was just covered with a dome.

Some guy with brain cancer raped the girlfriends he killed.

And in the end it turned out that the dome was the work of alien children. Look! They wanted to play. Like with ants.

I also remember that one of the characters in the book took methamphetamine and described it like this:

“God created the tree of paradise. Meth is the fruit of this tree.”

10/10.

When published: 2009.

How many pages: 1190.
