A big book of aphorisms, worldly wisdom and quotes

Aesop

(c. 620 BC, Nessebar - c. 564 BC, Delphi, Phokis, Greece)
Semi-mythical ancient Greek fabulist. He is considered the founder of the fable genre; The allegorical manner of expressing thoughts that is used to this day is named after him - Aesopian language.

It is impossible to correct an evil person; he can only change his appearance, but not his character.

It is necessary either not to approach the kings at all, or to tell them only what pleases them.

Fire, woman and sea are three disasters.

It will be bad for all people when everyone demands their own.

A true friend is known in misfortune.

A “bad person” does and will do evil, no matter what.

Those in whom you trust can destroy, and those in whom you neglect can save.

If something can be proven by deeds, then there is no need to waste words on it.

Be good to your wife so that she doesn’t want to try another man.

Murderers are not those who make daggers, but those who use their products; so it is not the slanderers who slander me, but you, if you take advantage of their slander.

We will often regret if all our desires are satisfied.

Life is still always better than death.

When grief strikes you, look around and be comforted: there are people whose lot is even worse than yours.

Thoughts and aphorisms 1 A wedding ring is the first link in the chain of married life. 2 Our life can be conveniently compared to a capricious river, on the surface of which a boat floats, sometimes tossed by a quiet wave, but often delayed in its movement by shallows and broken on an underwater rock. – Do I need to mention that this fragile boat on the market of fleeting time is none other than the man himself? 3 No one will embrace the immensity. 4 There is no thing so great that it is not surpassed in magnitude by an even greater one. There is no thing so small that something even smaller cannot fit into it. 5 Look to the root! 6 It’s better to say little, but well. 7 Science refines the mind; learning will sharpen your memory. 8 What will others say about you if you cannot say anything about yourself? 9 Self-sacrifice is the target of every shooter's bullet. 10 A person’s memory is a sheet of white paper: sometimes it is written well, and sometimes poorly. 11 A fading memory is like a lamp going out. 12 A weakening memory can also be compared to a fading forget-me-not. 13 I will always liken weakening eyes to an old, tarnished mirror, even cracked. 14 The imagination of a poet, overcome with grief, is like a foot enclosed in a new boot. 15 He who is passionately in love with one person endures another only for convenience. 16 If you want to be handsome, join the hussars. 17 Man, not being clothed with beneficent nature, received from above the gift of tailoring. 18 If there were no tailors, tell me: how would you distinguish between the official departments? 19 If you hide the truth from your friends, to whom will you reveal yourself? 20 What is the best? – Compare the past and bring it together with the present. 21 It is more useful to go through the path of life than the whole universe. 22 If you have a fountain, shut it up; give the fountain a rest. 23 A married rake is like a sparrow. 24 A diligent physician is like a pelican. 25 An egoist is like someone who has been sitting in a well for a long time. 26 Genius is like a hill rising out of a plain. 27 Clever speeches are like lines printed in italics. 28 I will boldly liken the beginning of a clear day to the birth of an innocent baby: perhaps the first one cannot do without rain, and the life of the second one without tears. 29 If the shadows of objects did not depend on the size of these latter, but had their own arbitrary growth, then, perhaps, soon there would not be a single bright place left on the entire globe. 30 Shooting at a target exercises the hand and gives fidelity to the eye. 31 A berdysh in the hands of a warrior is the same as a well-aimed word in the hands of a writer. 32 The magnetic needle, irresistibly drawn to the North, is like a husband who keeps the laws. 33 The first step of a baby is the first step towards his death. 34 Death is placed at the end of life so that it is more convenient to prepare for it. 35 In a house without tenants, you won’t find any known insects. 36 Do not take anything to extremes: a person who wants to eat too late runs the risk of eating the next day in the morning. 37 Food is as necessary for health as decent treatment is necessary for an educated person. 38 “Why,” says the egoist, “will I work for posterity, when it has done absolutely nothing for me?” - You are unfair, you madman! Posterity has already done for you that you, bringing the past closer to the present and future, can at will consider yourself: a baby, a youth and an old man. 39 Melt down the wax, but save the honey. 40 Explanatory expressions explain dark thoughts. 41 Not even a hussar uniform suits every person. 42 Watch out! 43 The chamberlain rarely enjoys nature. 44 No one will embrace the immensity. 45 Three things, once started, are difficult to finish: a) eat good food; b) talk with a friend who has returned from a hike and c) scratch where it itches. 46 Before you meet a person, find out: is his acquaintance pleasant for others? 47 Health without strength is the same as hardness without elasticity. 48 Everyone says that health is most valuable; but no one follows this. 49 The wealth of a dissolute person is equal to a short blanket: if you pull it to your nose, your legs will be exposed. 50 Do not irritate the wounds of your neighbor: offer balm to the suffering... When you dig a hole for someone else, you yourself will fall into it. 51 If you are asked: which is more beneficial, the sun or the month? – answer: month. For the sun shines during the day, when it is already light; and the month is at night. 52 But, on the other hand, the sun is better because it shines and warms; and the moon only shines, and then only on a moonlit night! 53 Self-love and love of fame are the best evidence of the immortality of the human soul. 54 The soul of an Indian who believes in metempsychosis is like a worm in a cocoon. 55 Reason only about what your concepts allow you to do. So: without knowing the laws of the Iroquois language, can you make such a judgment on this subject that would not be unfounded and stupid? 56 When you get down to business, gather your courage. 57 I would boldly liken a pen writing for money to a barrel organ in the hands of a wandering foreigner. 58 Click the mare on the nose and she will wave her tail. 59 Do not be timid before the enemy: man’s fiercest enemy is himself. 60 And turpentine is good for something! 61 Everyone necessarily causes benefit when used in its place. On the contrary: the exercises of the best dance master in chemistry are inappropriate; The dance advice of an experienced astronomer is stupid. 62 Time is measured by hours, and human life is measured by time; but how, tell me, will you measure the depth of the Eastern Ocean? 63 They say that work kills time; but this latter, without diminishing in any way, continues to serve humanity and the entire universe constantly in the same completeness and continuity. 64 There is sediment at the bottom of every heart. 65 Under sweet expressions lurk insidious thoughts: for example, someone who smokes tobacco often smells of perfume. 66 Many things are incomprehensible to us, not because our concepts are weak; but because these things are not included in the range of our concepts. 67 No one will embrace the immensity! 68 A chatterbox is like a pendulum: both need to be stopped. 69 Two people of the same build would not fight for long if the strength of one overcame the strength of the other. 70 Not everything that grows is strigi. 71 Nails and hair are given to man in order to provide him with constant but easy occupation. 72 Some singers sometimes wheeze. 73 Encouragement is as necessary for a brilliant writer as rosin is necessary for a virtuoso’s bow. 74 Once you lie, who will believe you? 75 Life is an album. Man is a pencil. Things are a landscape. Time is gumelastic: it bounces off and erases. 76 It is easier to continue laughing than to stop laughing. 77 Look into the distance - you will see the distance; look at the sky - you will see the sky; When you look into a small mirror, you only see yourself. 78 Where is the beginning of the end with which the beginning ends? 79 The sooner you drive, the sooner you will arrive. 80 If you want to be happy, be happy. 81 Do not seek unity in the totality, but rather in the uniformity of division. 82 He who is diligent in service should not be afraid of his ignorance; for he will read every new case. 83 The rooster wakes up early; but the villain is even earlier. 84 Zeal overcomes everything! 85 What we have, we don’t keep; Having lost, we cry. 86 And the oyster has enemies! 87 A renewed wound is much worse than a new one. 88 In the depths of every chest there is a snake. 89 Only in public service will you learn the truth. 90 I will boldly liken another walking old man to an hourglass. 91 Don't joke with women: these jokes are stupid and indecent. 92 An excessively rich man who does not help the poor is like a hefty nurse suckling with appetite her own breast at the cradle of a starving child. 93 Magnet points north and south; It is up to a person to choose a good or bad path in life. 94 Don’t put leggings on other people’s legs. 95 Man is bifurcated from below, and not from above, so that two supports are more reliable than one. 96 Man corresponds with the entire globe, and through the press communicates even with distant posterity. 97 The stupidest man was

Ancient Greek playwright, father of European tragedy. He invented a type of theater performance - tragedy.

It's not scary for a wise person to seem stupid.

Only those who are not worthy of envy are not blasphemed.

A successful fool is a great disaster.

The blood that lives in memories glues centuries together.

The voice of the people is dangerous when the truth is behind it.

I think the dead don't care whether they sleep or rise again.

If strength is combined with justice, then what could be stronger than this union?

The idle talker is lashed with a double lash.

Successful scoundrels are intolerable.

Preface

Eastern wisdom is the foundation of modern philosophy, which is called the most insidious among all the humanities. After all, she asks eternal questions that trouble every person: “Who am I in this world?”, “Does the soul exist?”, “What is the meaning of life?”, “Is there life after death?”, “What is truth?” Scientists, of course, put forward their hypotheses, but that’s why they are hypotheses, because they raise doubts. And only Eastern sages give short and clear answers to these complex questions in their aphorisms and parables so that you want to believe them. It's as if they draw wisdom from above. How they manage to put so many meanings into a short phrase or brief teaching - psychological, everyday, personal, social, one can only guess and admire.

You too will be delighted while reading this book, which contains the best aphorisms, parables and quotes from Eastern sages! Enjoy Eastern wit, logic, and education. Become for a while an obedient student, listening to the many-wise Teachers. And maybe, by listening to their words, you yourself will find answers to all the questions that concern you. And you will surpass the eastern mentors, becoming a real Sage.

Lao Tzu

Ancient Chinese philosopher (579–499 BC). His name translates as Old Baby or Wise Old Man. The founder of the religious and philosophical school of Taoism. Within the framework of modern historical science, the historicity of Lao Tzu is questioned, however, in scientific literature he is often still identified as the founder of Taoism. In the religious and philosophical teachings of most Taoist schools, Lao Tzu is traditionally revered as a deity - one of the Three Pure Ones.

* * *

If someone has harmed you, do not take revenge. Sit on the bank of the river, and soon you will see the corpse of your enemy floating past you.

* * *

Never say never because the days go by so fast and nothing stays the same.

* * *

A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.

* * *

The one who knows does not speak. The one who speaks does not know.

* * *

When laws and orders multiply, the number of thieves and robbers increases.

* * *

It is necessary to restore order when there is still no turmoil.

* * *

When there are no enemies, there is no war.

* * *

The best ruler is the one about whom the people only know that he exists.

* * *

If you do not honor the sages, then there will be no quarrels among the people. If you do not value rare objects, then there will be no thieves among the people. If you do not show what can cause envy, then the hearts of the people will not worry. Therefore, when ruling a country, a completely wise man makes the hearts of his subjects empty and their stomachs full. His control weakens their will and strengthens their bones. It constantly strives to ensure that the people do not have knowledge and passions, and those who have knowledge do not dare to act. The practice of non-action always brings peace.

* * *

The trouble of the whole world comes from little things, just as great things come from small things.

* * *

He who knows how to control others is strong, but he who knows how to control himself is even stronger.

* * *

When people know a lot, it is difficult to manage them.

* * *

When true virtue is lost, good nature appears; when good nature is lost, justice appears; when justice is lost, decency appears. The rules of decency are only a semblance of truth and the beginning of all disorder.

* * *

True words are not pleasant, pleasant words are not true.

* * *

True words are not graceful. Fine words are not trustworthy. Kind is not eloquent. An eloquent person cannot be kind. He who knows does not prove, he who proves does not know.

* * *

Be attentive to your thoughts, they are the beginning of actions.

* * *

There is no case in which a spy would not be useful.

* * *

Overcoming the difficult begins with the easy, the realization of the great begins with the small, for in the world the difficult is formed from the easy, and the great from the small.

* * *

Although there is no object in the world that would be weaker and more delicate than water, it can destroy the hardest object.

* * *

The one who knows and pretends not to know is on top. He who pretends to know without knowledge is sick.

* * *

He who talks a lot often fails.

* * *

A worthy husband puts on thin clothes, but has a precious stone in himself.

* * *

It is better to be soft on the outside and hard on the inside than hard on the outside and soft on the inside.

* * *

He who exposes himself to the light does not shine.

* * *

Don't search, otherwise you will lose. Don't look and you will find.

* * *

A complete being knows without teaching, sees without looking, and achieves without doing.

* * *

Debt without love is no joy. Truth without love makes a person critical. Parenting without love creates contradictions. Order without love makes a person petty. Subject knowledge without love makes a person always right. Possession without love makes a person stingy. Faith without love makes a person a fanatic. Woe to those who are stingy with love. Why live if not to love?

* * *

By the will of fortune, a person can rule the whole world for some time, but by the will of love and goodness he can rule the world forever.

* * *

He who does not fight is invincible.

* * *

When everyone knows that good is good, evil also arises.

* * *

You are controlled by the one who makes you angry.

* * *

Free yourself from the desire to have.

* * *

If you measure your success by the measure of others' praise and blame, your anxiety will be endless.

* * *

Never judge a person until you have walked a long way in their shoes.

* * *

Life is short and therefore you should not waste time, you should enjoy it.

Avicenna (Ibn Sina)

Persian scientist, philosopher, doctor (980–1037 BC). He was the court physician of the Samanid emirs and Daylemite sultans, and for some time he was the vizier in Hamadan. In total, he wrote more than 450 works in 29 fields of science, of which only 274 have reached us. The most famous and influential philosopher-scientist of the medieval Islamic world. For many years he worked on the “Canon of Medicine,” a medical encyclopedia that brought him worldwide fame.

Constant drunkenness is harmful, it spoils the nature of the liver and brain, weakens the nerves, causes nerve disease, and sudden death.

Idleness and idleness not only give rise to ignorance, they are at the same time the cause of disease.

The sea of words is full of hidden meaning, I learned to read this meaning a long time ago. But when I think about the secrets of the Universe, I understand that I cannot read them.

Just as the clear light of the sun is hidden from the blind, so there is no road to truth for fools.

If my friend is friends with my enemy, then I should not hang out with my friend. Beware of sugar that is mixed with poison, beware of a fly that sat on a dead snake.

If you prefer vegetable food, then be strictly at odds with fast food.

One who gives up physical exercise often wastes away, because the strength of his organs weakens due to refusal to move.

You, who have left a stamp on the world of villainy, ask for grace to descend upon you. Do not hope: there will be no forgiveness forever, For he who sows evil is evil and must reap.

The soul of the Universe is truth.

Our rocky hearts are bound by love because you are as impregnable as a stone, and I am more patient than him.

They say about wisdom: it is priceless, but the world does not pay a penny for it.

He who does not value happiness is approaching unhappiness.

* * *

If from a young age you have chosen the path to the cherished truth, do not argue with the ignorant, forget their advice.

* * *

The limit is great from Earth to Saturn, I wanted to overcome the ignorance in it. I have solved many mysteries in this world, but, alas, I have not been able to solve the riddle of death.

* * *

He who is old cannot burn with a young fire.

* * *

It would be a blessing if until the last road the Mind knew neither doubts nor worries.

* * *

With donkeys, be a donkey - don't show your face! Ask the youngest person - he will say “I am great!” And if anyone doesn’t have donkey ears, he is a clear heretic for donkeying!

* * *

Wine is our friend, but there is deceit in it: If you drink a lot, it’s poison, if you drink a little, it’s medicine. Do not harm yourself with excess, drink in moderation - and your kingdom will last...

* * *

I’ll dye my hair with basma, I’ll be young again, But not before the raven can become gray like me.

* * *

Truly wonderful things: brainless bodies are lifted up, They were endowed with stupidity by nature, and their ancestral nobility lifted them up.

* * *

I conjure you, heaven, for God’s sake, give me the answer: You are spinning, but is there any sense in this or not?

* * *

When you approach the ignorant arrogantly, Be an exemplary donkey among false sages. They have such an abundance of donkey traits that anyone who is not a donkey is considered an infidel.

* * *

When we die, then every single one of us will know that we know nothing.

* * *

The less often a hand raises the table cup of wine, the stronger it is in battle and the braver and more skillful it is in business.

I would live peacefully, having found joy, Oh, if only I knew who I am! At least once to comprehend why am I wandering now? If not, I would cry with a thousand eyes.

Confucius

Ancient thinker and philosopher of China (551–479 BC). His teachings had a profound influence on life in China and East Asia, becoming the basis of the philosophical system known as Confucianism. The teachings of Confucius on the rules of behavior of princes, officials, warriors and peasants spread in China as widely as the teachings of Buddha in India. Already at the age of just over 20 years, he became famous as the first professional teacher in the Celestial Empire. Confucianism reached the status of state ideology, which remained until the beginning of the 20th century, only temporarily giving way to Buddhism and Taoism. This led to the exaltation of the figure of Confucius and his inclusion in the religious pantheon.
