Past, present and future exist simultaneously: a controversial new theory

The Block Universe Theory

Dr. Skow is not the first scientist to challenge the way we all perceive time.

In 1915, Einstein presented the theory of unified space and time. In his general theory of relativity, he proposes that spacetime takes the form of a manifold or continuum. And if you look, you'll see it's like a four-dimensional vector space. And this vector is known as “block theory”.

“The distinction between past, present and future is but a persistent illusion.”

Einstein's theory is considered to be the closest to the true answer of what the universe means in a cosmological sense. So it makes perfect sense to think of the block universe as if it were real.

Dr. Skow fully supports this theory. Instead of thinking that time and events pass us by and then disappear completely, perhaps we should think that they still exist and exist simultaneously in different parts of spacetime. We just can't access anything outside of this block we're in.

Past

We work with the past when we remember, reflect and draw wisdom from it. Meanwhile, the past can also haunt us in moments when we are vulnerable, such as when we engage in self-flagellation or re-experience traumatic moments, down to the sights, smells and sounds. There are things that we diligently avoid, simply because we cannot accept them.

How to analyze the past

: Ask yourself, does my past have power over me, or can I look back on it with wisdom and gratitude?

Healing:

Body-focused therapy can help process trauma, and journaling and reflection help complete the work. If you create a controlled environment for yourself where you feel psychologically safe (ideally with the support of a trained professional), you can teach your mind and body self-control and thus stop avoiding certain situations.

Time travel

Once you try to wrap your head around this theory, you'll begin to realize that it could also change the way we think about time travel.

If this theory is real, then we can't just travel through time and change it. If everything happened at the same time—your past, present, future—then it would be impossible to create a “grandfather paradox.”

You wouldn't make any catastrophic changes. Instead, you will only travel through time and experience it as it is and as it will always be.

The past does not exist!

Have you ever thought that the only time we live is the present?

In the present we take active actions and get results. The more “in the present” a person lives, the more effective he is. And one of the main enemies of our effectiveness is the habit of many people to endlessly think about the past or worry about upcoming problems in the future.

People experience emotions about the past, trying to “change” it in their thoughts, and go through options for solutions to events that have already happened. At the same time, they also place all their attention, energy, efforts and life itself there, in the past.

However, it is necessary to understand that the past does not exist! It doesn't exist at all! Yes, you can “rely on” specific physical things obtained in the past, but nothing more. For example, you “worked” in the gym and you have a great body. Or you have a house, an apartment, a car, a dress - physical things that you can touch.

Perhaps you had a valuable experience that is important for the future - it can be analyzed from a distance. For example, there was a bankrupt business, and now you are creating another one. It is good to intellectually analyze mistakes or successful moves so that the new business does not go bankrupt, but turns out better. That is, unemotional analysis is the only reason for which it is worth remembering anything at all.

Everything else simply does not exist. It doesn't matter how your mother behaved with you when you were five years old. That 27-year-old girl (the mother from the past) is long gone - she is now a retired old woman. Just like that five-year-old child is gone - you have long been an adult. It doesn't matter how many problems and troubles you have had or victories and successes. After all, they don’t exist in the present either.

All experiences and coming up with alternative versions of the past are simply a meaningless “drain” of your energy. Even problems that seem to be drawn from the past exist, again, only right now. There will be no benefit from endlessly thinking about the past or worrying about the future; on the contrary, there is a risk of developing depression or psychosomatic illnesses.

To live an effective life, you need to actively switch to the present. Set yourself the conscious task of getting as much buzz, pleasure and enjoyment as possible from directly living each moment. If I pour, for example, tea and instead of enjoying the drink, I become immersed in thoughts about the past or future, this will be a pointless waste of time and energy, that is, a mistake. And you can get energy only by experiencing the buzz and pleasure in the present.

It is interesting that traditionally “female” pleasures are the pleasures of the present. Women tend to be in the present more than men. The work of the parasympathetic nervous system is a “high right now”, relaxation right now. This feeling is often called “feminine energy.” The more you extract pleasant emotions and pleasure from the present, the more strength and activity you will have to create an even better future. The task is to learn to turn every little thing into pleasure. Smell, taste, bite off a little, feel with all your senses. Admire the beautiful view, enjoy nature. The more you master these tricks with your thinking, the more energy you will have to change the world.

The work of the sympathetic nervous system is often called “male energy” - it produces adrenaline. Male energy is aimed at the future, at the goal, at the result, at “catching up with the deer” in order to get food.

How to properly balance the past, future and present? To simplify a little, then in an ideal picture, your past exists in a detached form, as an analysis that does not affect you emotionally. The present is a buzz, pleasure, relaxation, and the future is your conscious active actions to organize your life and business the way you want, because you have enough energy for it. With this approach, you can, without straining, enjoy the present, and then leave the house full of energy and take active action, creating an even better future.

With an ineffective model, people in the present do not allow themselves to relax: they endlessly scroll thoughts in their heads, become tense, load themselves with negative information from social networks and TV, and as a result, they do not have enough energy and activity to act. A negative feedback loop is formed: the more dissatisfaction and anxiety, the less strength and energy, the worse the results in life, the more worries - and so they “bring” themselves to illness.

So turn on your awareness!

Don't let the past take away from you the joy of the present and the accomplishments of the future.

Future

In Taoist philosophy, there is a statement that what we mistakenly think of as luck is actually careful planning. By thinking about different options for the development of future events, we create different possibilities for achieving them. Likewise, positive psychology founder Martin Seligman says that the main difference between optimists and pessimists is not an exaggeratedly positive way of thinking or a tendency to see the positive side of everything. Instead, it is the understanding that failure is not permanent and the ability to take steps to regain control. The consequence of opposing views on life is anxiety, that is, living in constant fear of the future.

How to analyze the future:

Ask yourself, do I see my future as being able to enjoy the ordinary, to experience joy and excitement? Do I have thoughtful plans that take into account the possibility of unforeseen circumstances, because life is always unpredictable? Or are all my ideas about the future based on worries, both well-founded and imaginary?

Healing:

Have realistic plans for the future and work towards them to create a sense of stability to explore and thrive. If you are feeling anxious, seek support from a trained professional who can help you manage your anxiety and teach you how to use neural pathways to your advantage.

Signs from the future

Imagine that in the future, by fate, you are destined to become a person with certain qualities, the necessary experience for the soul.
Now you don’t know about this and are not following the right path. But suddenly problems and difficulties in life begin to appear, which force you to gain the necessary qualities and experience. Often this happens through problems and suffering. If a person feels well in his soul, then without any “kicks” from the Universe he understands what and how he needs to do. Very often, problems due to fate are signs from the future that will force a person to change in order to gain the necessary experience of soul development.

How the influence of the future is felt in the present

We return to our usual thinking. Often people pick up signals from the so-called future and do inexplicable things in the present. Let me give you a couple of examples.

The girl had a desire to buy a beer mug. She was not a fan of foamy drinks, she did not have a man. After the purchase, she lived alone for 35 years and married a man who collected beer mugs.

Another case. The woman bought herself a chic dress that she had nowhere to wear. Where she lived, this dress was out of place. After some time, she won a trip on a cruise ship, where she wore her dress and glowed with happiness.

And there are quite a lot of such examples. The future influences the present, but its influence can only be perceived in the flow of intuition and feelings of the soul. If logic comes into play, then there can be no question of those purchases from the examples above.

Pay attention when you suddenly want to do things that are inexplicable by logic. Surely it is your intuition that wants to tell you something or set the correct vector of movement.

The present

Do you remember the last time you were so distracted that much of the conversation escaped your attention? Now remember the opposite situation, the last time you were completely immersed in any process, down to every sensation. This is the power of the present moment.

Many of us tend to constantly occupy ourselves with anything, from work to substance use and socializing, just to avoid being alone with ourselves and not getting bored. But mindfulness is not just about experiencing feelings of ecstatic bliss or enlightenment. It is also the ability to feel comfortable alone when bored.

In addition, there is a flow state. Unlike mindfulness, which is about understanding and living your internal and external experiences, flow is a state of complete immersion where time flies by. Action and awareness merge and you feel in control and happy with the results of your work. Notably, a recent study by psychology professor Kate Sweeney found that those who coped best with quarantine were those who spent more time and longer in a state of flow.

How to analyze the present:

Ask yourself, can I be alone with my thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations without judgment? Do I feel comfortable when I'm bored?

Healing:

Learn to deal with boredom. Get used to the fact that all sorts of thoughts come and go, and that it's okay to not always feel good. Know that life is not only about joy, pleasure, or avoiding what we are used to thinking of as negative emotions (sadness, anxiety, frustration, etc.). Do things that allow you to achieve a state of flow.
