Old wise Georgian proverbs that are still relevant today
I really like reading proverbs of different nations and comparing their meaning with modern life.
And I have even ceased to be surprised at how accurately sometimes the centuries-old wisdom of the people can reflect the way we live today. It would seem like a century of technological progress, life changes a lot every decade, the level of education and development does not stand still, but the character and souls of people do not change. Only useful gadgets have made changes to the lifestyle of modern people; life has become much easier, but the people themselves have not changed.
In this article, I have collected several proverbs and sayings of the Georgian people, which, in my opinion, can be safely used by the modern generation.
It is better to live in need, but be a human, than to live in abundance, but be a pig.
A bold statement, but it is very true. Honor and dignity have not lost their meaning; perhaps there are fewer people who live honestly and with dignity, but the essence has not changed. The values are still the same.
Where there is no love, there is no joy
Love has ruled the world in all centuries; because of love, people have committed reckless acts and risked their lives, but it has always been vitally necessary for everyone. In addition to all of the above, love inspires, inspires and makes a person happy. This is how it was and how it will always be.
Rather than sit for nothing, it is better to work for nothing
There were always enough slackers and slackers. Only life and responsibilities have changed. There is no longer any need to chop wood and light the stove, to take the cattle to pasture... Although... After all, this is how people live today too. However, even in modern life, which is easy and carefree compared to the life of our ancestors, there are those who are too lazy to do even easy and simple work. Doing something useful is always better than just counting flies or staring at the ceiling.
Wealth is blind, it is like a fly: now it lands on manure, now it lands on a rose.
Anyone can become rich, no matter what family they were born into or where they live. There would be a desire. And also a little desire and perseverance.
A fool is wiser than a wise man in what he himself has known
Sometimes even today a simple worker, without a higher education, or an ordinary housewife is in some ways much wiser than a person with two diplomas. Experience is what makes a person wise, not smart books and years of study. This is not to say that there is no need to study, but to the fact that one should not underestimate the advice and instructions of those who do not have an education. In some ways they may be smarter than many.
If you want to get rid of a bad neighbor, give him a loan
Perhaps this can be safely said about the Russian people. Yes, about anyone in general.
It's bad not to have a brother, but even worse not to have friends
The broad Georgian soul does not tolerate loneliness. But always, in all years and eras, under any life circumstances, it was important to have a faithful and reliable friend nearby. That's how it is today. The only problem is not to make a mistake...
The more words, the less things to do
This is the wisdom of all ages and peoples. You can find many analogues to this proverb in any language.
Time passes. Our grandmothers and great-grandmothers used folk wisdom in everyday life and knew proverbs and sayings by heart. This was all passed down from one generation to another. And today there are few who remember everything. But all these are not just words - this is experience accumulated over centuries. And, as you can see, even the old proverbs are quite applicable in our lives today. Because people, their desires and needs do not change. Only the lifestyle changes. And therefore, perhaps it is worth turning to folk wisdom more often. Often these are exactly the words that are in everyone’s soul, but which are sometimes not so easy to formulate into a single thought.
And often this helps and makes our life easier.

Georgian toast to a man
At a driving school in Georgia, a driver's license applicant takes an exam. The inspector explains the traffic situation: - You are driving in a car along a narrow road. On the left is the high-high mountain. On the right is a steep, steep abbreviation. Suddenly on the road there is a beautiful girl. And next to her is a terrible, terrible old woman. Who are you going to push? - Of course, the old woman! - Fool!.. You need to apply the brake! So let's drink so that in a difficult situation we don't forget to hit the brakes!
There lived in the mountains a beauty, better than whom there was no one in the world. And two horse friends fell in love with her. One came and confessed his love to her, and she answered: “Do you see that mountain over there? If a fire burns at its top all night, I will become yours.” The horseman galloped off. Another guy came, confessed his love, and the beauty told him: “There will be a fire burning on that mountain all night.” If you put it out, then I will become yours.” The horseman galloped away and began to climb the mountain. In the morning he climbs to the top and sees a burning fire, and a sleeping friend next to him. Then he adds wood to the fire and says: “Sleep well, friend!” So let's drink to real male friendship!
Suliko and Shota lived and fell in love with each other. They fell in love and got married. We just got married, Shota has to go on a business trip. “Don’t worry,” he says to his young wife, “I’ll be back in three days.” Three days have passed, three times three days have passed, and Shota does not return. Ten times three days passed, and still no sign of Shota. The young wife became worried and sent telegrams to ten faithful friends in ten cities. And telegrams came from ten cities from ten faithful friends: “Don’t worry, Shota is with us.” So let's drink to true friends who do not let you down in trouble.
The time has come for the old man to die, but he doesn’t want to die. He prayed, raised his hands to the sky and turned to God: “God, let me live at least a little more!” “How old do you want?” - asked God. “As many as there are leaves on this tree.” "No, that will not do". “Well, then how many apples are there on this tree?” “That won’t work either. I’ll let you live as long as you have friends.” “I have no friends,” the old man said sadly and wiped away a tear with a trembling hand. So let's drink to our friends, and may there be no fewer of them than leaves on the tree!
The Eastern ruler once visited a prison where twenty prisoners were serving their sentences. - Why are you sitting here? - asked the bishop. Nineteen out of twenty immediately swore that they were imprisoned innocently, solely due to a judicial error. And only the twentieth admitted that he was in prison for theft. “Release him immediately,” the ruler ordered, “he can have a bad influence on all the other honest people who are here.” So let's drink to the people whose honesty helps them to be free!
A flock of sheep descended from the mountains into the valley. Suddenly an eagle swooped down from the sky, grabbed and dragged away the lamb. The little bird saw all this. She decided: “Why don’t I act like the eagle? And what a lamb, I’ll carry off a whole ram.” The bird flew higher, folded its wings and rushed down. But it ended with her hitting the ram’s horn and killing herself. So let's drink to ensure that our desires coincide with our capabilities!
Somewhere high, high in the mountains, where the air is as pure as a baby’s tear, and the rivers are as fast as thought, there lived a young horseman who herded sheep (he was a shepherd). And then one day, when he was grazing his sheep, the ringing silence of the mountains was cut through by the trill of a mobile phone. All the sheep stopped chewing the grass and turned their heads to the young shepherd. The shepherd took out his phone and turned to the sheep and said: “Calm down guys, it’s me!” So let's drink to the fact that no sheep will prevent us from communicating today!
