Quotes and phrases from “Me Before You” (2016)

See you laterText

Clark, by the time you read this letter, several weeks will have passed. Even with your newfound organizational skills, I doubt you made it to Paris before early September. I hope the coffee is good and strong, the croissants are fresh, the weather is still sunny enough to sit outside on the metal chairs that invariably sit unevenly on the pavement. This is not a bad place. "Marquis". The steak is also good if you decide to dine here. And if you look to the left, you will see “EʼArtisan Parfumeur”, where after reading the letter you should definitely try a perfume called something like “Papillons Extrême” (I don’t remember exactly). I always thought they would suit you. Okay, the instructions are over. There are several things that I want to tell you and would say in person, but: a) you would be upset and b) you would not let me finish. You always talked too much. So: the check you received in an envelope from Michael Lawler is not the whole amount, but just a small gift to get you through the first weeks without work and get to Paris. When you return to England, take this letter to Michael to his London office and he will issue you with the appropriate documents so that you can access the account he has opened for me in your name. There is enough money in this account to buy a nice house, pay for college and full-time expenses. My parents will be notified. Hopefully, with this and Michael Lawler's legal support, the concern will be kept to a minimum. Clark, I can hear your breathing quicken. Don't panic and don't try to get your money back - it's not enough to keep you on the couch for the rest of your life. But it will buy you freedom, both from the claustrophobic town we both called home and from the decisions you had to make. I'm not giving you money so you'll be sad, or feel indebted, or honor my damn memory .I give them to you because there is little good left in my life. Only you. I recognize that knowing me has brought you grief and pain, and I hope that one day, when the anger and sadness subsides, you will understand that I could not have done otherwise, and this will help you live a truly good life , better than if we had not met. At first you will feel uneasy in the changed world. Leaving a cozy nest is always unusual. But I hope you also feel excited. Your face when you returned from snorkeling told me everything. There's a hunger in you, Clark. Fearlessness. You just buried it like most people. I'm not saying you should jump off tall buildings, swim with whales, etc., although deep down I like to imagine you doing those things. Just live brightly. Push yourself. Don't stop there. Wear striped stockings with pride. And if you want to move in with some ridiculous guy and settle down, don't forget to hide some of the money. Knowing you have a choice is a luxury. Knowing that I provided it to you is my consolation. Well, that's all. You are carved into my heart, Clark. From the very day she came into my life with her stupid outfits, bad jokes and complete inability to hide the movements of her soul. You changed my life much more than this money will change yours. Don't think about me too often. I don't like to imagine you being upset. Just live well. Just live. With love,

Will

“Me Before You” - a story about a small life and big dreams

Will Trainer is a young, energetic, successful guy. He enjoys riding a motorcycle, traveling the world, playing sports and just enjoying life. Thanks to his beauty and charisma, he can seduce any girl. And it’s not at all surprising that he’s dating a real beauty. Since childhood, Will was brought up in a wealthy family, and now he runs his own business, which brings him considerable income. He is smart, ambitious and always achieves his goals, which causes envy among others. He made plans for the future and wanted to conquer the whole world, but fate decreed otherwise.

While rushing to a business meeting, Trainer accidentally falls under the wheels of a motorcycle rushing at high speed. This terrible event changed his life forever. After lengthy treatment, Will was able to go home, but in a wheelchair. Now he is no longer that cheerful, energetic guy, he is a quadriplegic whose arms and legs are completely paralyzed. It has become a houseplant that requires constant care. However, if the plant blooms, puts out new stems, pulls its leaves towards the sunlight, Will only fades. Unpleasant procedures, a huge number of pills, severe complications, a wheelchair - this is what Will Trainer’s every day is now filled with.

Louise Clarke is a 26-year-old girl who lives with her parents. In order to somehow help his family, Lou has had to work for 6 years in a local cafe as a waitress. Despite the fact that the work does not bring in a lot of money, the girl fulfills her duties with pleasure. She likes to communicate with people, observe different lives, and see the happy faces of couples in love.

Lou herself also has a boyfriend with whom she has been together for several years. Patrick plays sports and devotes all his free time to training. Everyone is sure that Louise and Patrick will definitely get married in the future, because they are perfect for each other. In the meantime, Lou is trying to live for today, without making any plans in advance. She is accustomed to an ordinary life, which, like many, consists of work, family and her beloved boyfriend.

The only thing that distinguishes Louise from other residents of the town is her unusual clothing style, thanks to which the girl clearly stands out from the crowd. But sometimes life gives us unexpected surprises that we cannot refuse. The owner of the cafe where Lou works tells her that they are closing. The girl is forced to look for a new job, but she still has no idea how much this will change her life.

What connects Will Trainer and Louise Clarke? How will these two completely different people, with different destinies, dreams and opportunities, end up on the same path? And where will this road lead them?

Lu goes to the labor exchange to find a new job as soon as possible. However, the girl is not satisfied with all the proposed vacancies, from an electricity consultant to a poultry farm worker. The last option left is a nurse for a disabled person. Since Clarke needed money, she agreed, with little idea of what awaited her.

The next day, Louise was supposed to have an interview, after which she would either get a job or return to the labor exchange. The first thing that surprised the girl when she approached the appointed place was a huge house with two entrances and a long driveway. At the door, Lou was met by a pleasant woman who interviewed her, discussing all her questions and explaining her responsibilities in detail.

But what Clarke heard simply unsettled her. It turns out that a nurse was needed not for some dim-witted old man, but for a young guy who was injured in a traffic accident several years ago. And the third thing that Louise did not expect was that she was hired!

Since then, a certain Will Trainer has appeared in Lou’s life - an obnoxious disabled guy who is annoyed by everything around him. At first, the girl was sure that Will hated her, trying to get her to leave. No matter how Louise tried to find an approach to the guy, offering various options for spending time, he sharply refused, not even wanting to talk to her. After the first day at her new job, the girl felt overwhelmed and tired. Louise wanted to give up everything, but she couldn’t let her family down, who needed her help so much. The girl decided not to give up; for the first time she received a highly paid position and now she is obliged to go to the end.

Gradually, Lou got used to work, learning more and more about Trainer’s life. And over time, the girl realized how much she was mistaken... Will, who put on the “I hate everyone” mask, actually hated himself, his meaningless existence and the wheelchair to which he was tied. He tried to isolate himself from all the people who tried to force him to do what he had not wanted to do for a long time - live. And Louise, without knowing it, became the last hope for his salvation.

Problems of the novel

How can an ordinary girl and a disabled guy influence each other? How cleverly fate brought two people together at the most opportune time for them! She became the last ray of light for him, and he gave her a chance for a new life.

He and she

In a film where 95% of the screen time is devoted to two heroes, acting becomes a key factor in success. Emilia Clarke played the complete opposite of her Daenerys Targaryen. Her heroine Louise (also Clark, by the way) manages to combine wisdom and immaturity, beauty and terrible dressing style. She is equally good both in comical scenes and in those moments when the entire audience begins to sniffle. Those who were planning to see the next Cinderella or “Ugly Girl” will be disappointed: Louise Clarke is a completely new, unique character.

Sam Claflin, who played the paralyzed millionaire Will, deserves no less, if not more, respect. The guy everyone knew as Finnick from The Hunger Games (the handsome hunk who beat everyone with a trident) got a very difficult role. In “Me Before You,” he could act only with speech and facial expressions - his hero is absolutely helpless. At the same time, from the very beginning, when the diagnosis becomes known, you understand that you cannot expect a miraculous healing. But you still empathize and hope, because there must be at least some kind of justice in this world! And you admire the hero, no matter what decisions he makes. While developing this character, Thea Sherrock also moved away from the usual template - even at the very beginning, Will does not look like a misanthrope who poisons the lives of those around her. Overall, Sam Claflin did a brilliant job. Perhaps after this premiere, truly big and serious roles will come to him - the actor deserves it.

There is nothing superfluous in Me Before You. The film is very solid and high quality. Each minor character is truly needed, each actor plays conscientiously. Romantic conversations, kisses and tears are always appropriate and will not irritate even hardened cynics. The whole picture could have been filmed within four walls - the plot would not have suffered much. But the action takes place against the backdrop of the most beautiful landscapes of Britain and is accompanied by a wonderful soundtrack. It is not surprising that the film’s box office receipts have already almost tripled the costs of its creation. And fans of the genre will probably watch Thea Sherrock’s debut film repeatedly.

Plot

The story, of course, is far from new. Why, she’s as old as the hills. The very first trailer clearly and clearly explained the plot of the film - he is a disabled millionaire, she is a simple girl. And, frankly, the same trailer completely discourages going to the cinema for the next “tears and kisses”. But “Me Before You” pleasantly surprises. This is exactly the case when it is not the story itself that is important, but the skill of the storyteller. And with this, Thea Sherrock turned out to be all right.

The director avoided a number of rather boring melodramatic templates. For example, in the film there are no “bad people” trying to upset the happiness of lovers. Yes, if you look at it, there are no negative characters at all. And this fact inevitably sets the narrative on new, unconventional “rails.” At the beginning of the film, it seemed inevitable that Louise (Emilia Clarke) would undergo a Pretty Woman-style makeover. But Sherrock also moved away from this template. Her characters changed a lot over the course of the film, but this did not require dressing Emilia Clarke in expensive rags to the song “Pretty woman”.

“Me Before You,” although it immerses the viewer in an atmosphere of terrible human grief, is actually a very kind film. The topic of indifference and neglect towards people with disabilities, of course, is touched upon, but is not raised to the forefront. Yes, the completely paralyzed Will (Sam Claflin) is often offered a handshake, told to “come along,” “take it,” and so on. But it doesn’t follow from the picture that people are bastards. Rather, they show us how, without noticing it, we hurt people with disabilities. Much more attention is paid to another problem that is truly relevant and discussed in the modern world.

“The issue of life or death of a person who, by chance, found himself confined to a wheelchair without the right to healing - this is not often discussed out loud. The filmmakers tried to recreate the atmosphere of the book as much as possible, and they succeeded.”

The best quotes from Jojo Moyes books

Photo: UGC English writer Jojo Moyes is one of the few who have won the Romantic Novelists Association Award twice. This woman managed to devote her life to creating novels and short stories that sell millions of copies. Quotes from books are scattered across websites and fill pages on social networks. Let's present the best of them.

Beautiful love quotes are the essence of Jojo Moyes novels. They contain a lot of life, despair, freedom and the feeling that many fans of the writer’s work are looking for.

Here are the best quotes:

The combination of stress and heartbreak can wreak havoc on your peace of mind, but boy does it do wonders for your figure. (“Villa Arcadia”)

I still love you - even if there is no me, no love, no life on earth - I still love you. (“The last letter from your lover”)

Controversial issue

The film “Me Before You” mentions a very real organization from Switzerland – Dignitas (“Dignity”), which helps disabled and terminally ill people die. Even if you haven’t heard anything about it, you can imagine how much debate there is around the very fact of its existence. For the characters in Thea Sherrock's film, the issue of euthanasia is far from idle. Some say: “It’s his decision,” others answer: “Sin and murder.” Many people in the world were outraged by the book “Me Before You,” and the film did not add to their affection for this work. To the director’s credit, she never gave preference to either point of view. It just gave us the opportunity to look at the problem from different angles. This storyline will really give a lot of people pause.

“The main asset of the film is not its plot, but the representative acting troupe. Their combined charisma and appropriateness in their roles elevates debutante Sherrock's banal production to the level of worthy, memorable cinema."
