Background of the game world
The Metro universe develops in an alternative reality and begins in 2013 after the global nuclear conflict, when Russia, China and the DPRK exchanged missile strikes with NATO countries. Climate change has turned the northern hemisphere into an icy wasteland, and rising water levels have destroyed all coastal infrastructure. States are wiped off the face of the Earth, the world is ruled by anarchy,
In Moscow, where Metro 2033 takes place, people have taken refuge underground, turning metro stations and bunkers into their home. But instead of uniting, the small population is divided along ideological, religious or selfish interests; some are simply trying to survive. Often you will have to fight your way through.
The metro network is abandoned and falling apart, isolating the stations physically, which is why you have to get to the surface, where the harshest conditions for survival are. You have to weave between destroyed buildings, avoid patrols of local paramilitary gangs, various mutants, dangerous levels of radiation and induced psi radiation. Due to the lack of filters, cartridges and normal weapons, loners get out of the surface and back into the subway as quickly as possible.
Metro 2033 is practically a corridor shooter, the game locations are small but carefully designed - there is some kind of life going on at the stations, people swear, communicate and bargain, despite the insignificant standard of living and their plight. Sometimes in locations you can find branches to interesting events, supplies, diaries or secret passages.
All locations are made dark and ominous, perfectly conveying the atmosphere of post-apocalypse, general desolation and global catastrophe. While moving between stations, the character may hear strange noises, see strange flashes, and experience other visual glitches.
Plot and characters
The main character of Metro 2033 is a young man Artyom, who grew up after a nuclear war at the VDNKh station and was raised by his stepfather. How everyone is tied to their home station, helping its residents, working in a factory, learning to shoot and defend their home, which is located on the border of the “inhabited zone.”
This subway line has been unsettled for several years now - the outer stations are dying out under the attacks of the brutal Black mutants coming from the surface and tormenting people with telepathic hallucinations. At the time the events of the game began, the turn came to VDNKh - several of its residents had already died after patrol from the psi-influence of the Blacks.
A friend of his stepfather asks Artyom to report the appearance of the Blacks in Polis - the largest and most powerful metro station, friendly to VDNKh and other ordinary stations - and ask for their help in destroying the Blacks. However, VDNKh is too far from the central metro stations, so Artyom has to go through a very difficult path, full of all sorts of dangers.
Metro 2033's narrative is linear, like the game itself, and focuses on the story of one man seeking to save his station at any cost. The main details of the plot are told by Artem himself, others can be learned during cut scenes and dialogues, eavesdropping on the conversations of locals. Often the characters simply talk to each other without distracting the player from the gameplay.
A special feature of the plot is numerous minor characters in the role of fellow travelers - they join Artyom for literally 2-3 missions, after which they achieve their goals, die or disappear. Constant interaction creates a sense of lively and open storytelling.

Gameplay and single player
Being a standard corridor shooter, Metro 2033 encourages you to move forward and solve most problems with the power of your weapons, but you can try to complete the game in stealth.
The plot is closely intertwined with the gameplay, since, depending on the playing style, the player will have one of two endings - the main one or an alternative one. By committing bad deeds and squeezing resources, the player will receive a bad ending, while for good deeds, help, support with resources and a minimum of kills, an alternative ending will be given.
In the original, the stealth mode had problems, so most players chose the shooter mechanics of the game. This was also facilitated by the fact that signal traps were located everywhere, raising the station on alarm and provoking an attack by people (mutants), when the only chance to survive and move on was to kill everyone with a machine gun, hiding behind cover.
The player has a small arsenal at his disposal, consisting of common homemade weapons and rare industrial weapons that have survived from the time of the nuclear war. There are also grenades and throwing knives. The metro population does not experiment much with weapons due to the shortage of ammunition.
People have learned to produce homemade cartridges, but they have low lethal properties. While industrial 5.45 ammo is the local currency, it can be traded for anything... or used against particularly dangerous enemies.
Metro 2033 has a diverse bestiary based on creatures invented in the novel. Since during the conflict the parties used not only nuclear, but also chemical and bacteriological weapons, under this influence the animals changed and merged into terrifying organisms - crosses of rats, dogs and cats, pigs and moles.
All mutants have their own habitat - some are found only in the subway, others prefer to live on the surface and rarely appear underground, others, like “Librarians” and “Demons,” simply cannot go underground because of their size.
The mutants were prescribed a certain logic of behavior. The simplest ones, “Kikimoras”, always attack in a flock and scatter when they lose their numerical advantage, they are nimble and fast. The "eagle beetle" - an upright insect with the skeleton of a bird and the muzzle of an eagle, covered with thick chitinous armor - hunts alone and attacks in the dark, always going ahead.
The flying “Demon” tracks down its prey and dives down on it from above, lifts it into the air and drops it. Due to their size and ability to fly, they are the most dangerous opponents.

- The interface is close to reality - no health or stamina scale, no indicators of the state of the armor or the number of cartridges in the clip, or a convenient map. The gas mask blocks the view. The route can only be determined approximately using a compass.
