I congratulated him and parted with him..."

Truth without love is a lie

Dostoevsky quotes about love

***

With love, everything is bought, everything is saved... Love is such a priceless treasure that you can buy the whole world with it, and you can redeem not only your own, but also the sins of others.

***

In a truly loving heart, either jealousy kills love, or love kills jealousy.

***

Seek love and store love in your hearts. Love is so omnipotent that it regenerates ourselves.

***

If you love purely and love her purity in a woman and suddenly you are convinced that she is a lost woman, that she is depraved - you will love her depravity in her, this disgusting thing that is disgusting to you, you will love her... this is what love is like!..

***

Why is love praised? For suffering. People like to feel like holy martyrs, hostages of passions. Love is the most complex emotion, but it is finite, like everything in this world. And there is nothing sacred in it, as well as in those who believe and wait for it.

***

My longing for her would have driven me to my grave and literally driven me to suicide. I'm a miserable madman! Love in this form is a disease.

Life goes breathless without an aim. Fedor Dostoevsky

A striking example and convincing proof of this are the Christ-faced heroes of Dostoevsky. They live by love, by love they know God, people, the world and themselves. Every feeling and thought, desire and deed is filled with Divine love; they also bring into the souls of other people the conviction of the existence of God and the immortality of the soul. For them, love, God, the immortality of the soul are inseparable and not only concepts determined by each other, but also a living sensation, a living and absolute reality.

Through Christ-like love, a person grows faster and more confidently in God, approaching the irreplaceable ideal of the human race - the God-man Christ; he grows constantly until he comes “to a perfect man, to the measure of the full stature of Christ” [378]. A person comes to the complete perfection of his personality if he grows in “the age of God,” and not in his own humanity. For a person can become perfect only if he transforms and multiplies all his efforts in the God-man. Thanks to the divine-human virtues, a person achieves the highest fullness of personality, coming to divine-human love. For this love is the highest completeness of personality due to the fact that it finally unites a person with the God-man. Without this love, a person is half-human, sub-human. Moreover, without this love a person is without a core, a person is nothing [379]. Love is the “yes” that I say to myself; hatred is a “no” to oneself. Untranslatable, but expressively, R. Hamerling [380] coins this idea in the formula: love is das lebhafte Sich-selbst-bejahen des Seins - a living “yes” of being to itself [381].

In an inexplicable, mysterious way, every being is conditioned by love: the Being of God, and the human being, and in general every living being. In the world of living beings the following principle prevails: to love means to be. God is an eternal Being, for absolute love is His essence. This revelation was brought into the world by the God-man Christ, and His Christ-loving apostles of love spread this revelation throughout the world. According to this revelation, to love with Christ-like love means: already here on earth to live eternal life, conquer death and sin and be immortal. Not to love means to be dead, to remain in death. “We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers; He who does not love his brother remains in death.”[382]

Dostoevsky's Christ-loving soul is thoroughly imbued with the feeling and conviction that to love means to be. The fate of a person from beginning to end is determined by love. Dostoevsky equates “I am” with “I love.” If I love, then I exist, because I am connected with the Omnipresent; if I do not love, then I do not exist, because I am connected with non-existence. But that's not all. For the Slavic apostle of love, heaven is love, hell is hate. Whoever loves is in heaven, already here on earth; whoever does not love is already in hell, for hell is the impossibility of loving.

“Fathers and teachers, I think: what is hell?” - Dostoevsky asks through the lips of the holy elder Zosima and answers: “I reason like this: suffering is that you can no longer love. Once, in an infinite existence, not measurable by either time or space, a certain spiritual being was given, by his appearance on earth, the ability to say to himself: “I am and I love.” Once, only once, he was given a moment of active, living love, and for that earthly life was given, and with it times and seasons, and what: this happy being rejected the priceless gift, did not appreciate it, did not love it, looked mockingly and remained insensitive. Such a one, having already departed from the earth, sees Abraham’s bosom and talks with Abraham, as we are told in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, and contemplates paradise, and can ascend to the Lord, but that is precisely what he is tormented by, that he will ascend to the Lord, he who has not loved will come into contact with those who have loved, having neglected their love. For he sees clearly and says to himself: “Now I already have knowledge and even though I have thirsted to love, there will be no more achievement in my love, there will be no sacrifice, for earthly life is over and Abraham will not come even with a drop of living water, that is, again for nothing. earthly life, former and active, to cool the flame of thirst for spiritual love, which is now burning, having neglected it on earth; there is no more life and there will be no more time! Even though I would be glad to give my life for others, it is no longer possible, for the life that could have been sacrificed for love has passed, and now there is an abyss between that life and this existence” [383].

A certain Divine meaning of life flows into a loving heart, and a person feels with his whole being that the Divine Logos miraculously permeates and affirms the worlds. When love takes root in a person’s heart, it becomes the all-seeing eye of his soul and an infallible mentor in his righteous life. “The main thing is to love others as yourself,” says Dostoevsky, “that’s the main thing, and that’s all, you don’t need anything else: you’ll immediately find how to get settled” [384], you’ll understand how to live. If people made love the queen of their souls, then on earth in one day, in one hour, everything could work out in the best possible way.

You have to love life more than the meaning of life

Quotes from Dostoevsky about life

***

The hardest thing in life is to live and not lie... and... and not believe your own lies, yes, yes, that’s it!

***

Life is pain, life is fear, and man is unhappy. Now it's all pain and fear. Now a person loves life, because he loves pain and fear. And so they did. Life is now given for pain and fear, and this is all deception...

***

Remember my testament: never invent any plot or intrigue. Take what life itself gives. Life is much richer than all our imaginations! No imagination can come up with what the most ordinary, ordinary life sometimes gives you, respect life!

***

It happens that you live, but you don’t know that there is a book next to you, where your whole life is laid out as if on your fingers. And what you yourself had never guessed before, so here, as soon as you start reading in such a book, you yourself will little by little remember, and find, and unravel.

***

You must love life more than the meaning of life.

***

Study and read. Read serious books. Life will do the rest.

***

Life, life everywhere, life is in ourselves, and not in the external. There will be people next to us, and to be a person between people and remain one forever, in any unfortunate situations, not to become discouraged and not to fall - that’s what life is, that’s its task.

A person does not live his whole life, but creates himself, creates himself. Fedor Dostoevsky

You have to love life more than the meaning of life... Dostoevsky...
I'm confused, damn it... - said the Man. - You see, I don’t know where to go, I don’t know why. Time passes, and I don’t even really know who I am... I’m tired of uncertainty, tired of being afraid that I’ll do something wrong, tired of wandering in the dark, tired of making mistakes... “I understand,” said the Tree. - But how can I help you? “Lend me your meaning in life,” the Man repeated. “Maybe it will help...” “Okay,” agreed the Tree. - This is my meaning in life: to grow. - Grow? - asked the Man. - Just grow? That's all?? “Yes,” said the Tree, “just grow - that’s all,” and it fell silent. - Tree! Wait, don't fall asleep! - shouted the Man. — Explain what it means to “just grow”? After all, I’m just growing anyway! Or rather,” he corrected himself, “he used to grow, but now he has already grown... But the Tree did not answer, and the Man went to the river. - River! - shouted the Man. - What? - River responded. - Lend me your meaning in life! - asked the Man. - For what? - Reka asked. - You don’t have your own, or what? “No...” the Man said, lowering his head. “That’s how it is...” said Reka. - Okay then, listen. My meaning in life is to flow. “Leak...” repeated the Man. “Yes, yes, it’s flowing,” and the River purred somewhere over the stones. Deciding to wait to be sure if the River would clarify its position, the Man lay down on the shore and began to bask in the sun. - How are you, Man? - asked the Sun. “Actually, not very well,” the Man complained. “I can’t find the meaning of life.” The tree says: “Grow”, the River says: “Flow”, but I don’t really want to grow or flow... Maybe you can recommend something? What is your meaning in life? “With pleasure,” said the Sun. — My meaning in life is to give light. - “Give light”, hurt yourself! - The Man clasped his hands. - And it's all?

“That’s it,” the Sun winked. - A! No, there is more. - Come on? — the Man perked up. - Warm. Give warmth. And light! - the Sun reminded and rolled off beyond the horizon. It became dark. - Briefly, where to go! - the Man was indignant. - What should I do? Grow? Flow? Or maybe give light? To give light... A light bulb, perhaps, to hang on your nose and chat? Moon! Hey Luna! - the Man called. - Yes? — The moon appeared over the ridge of the mountain and shone brighter to see who was howling here. -What is your meaning in life? — the Man asked in a decadent voice. The moon paused and solemnly answered: “Feeling empty.” The echo echoed across the mountains. The man was already tired of being surprised by the answers, but here he could not help but be surprised: “How can you feel emptiness?” This is when there is nothing! - he exclaimed. - How can you not feel the emptiness? After all, this is where everything comes from,” the Moon objected softly and floated off into the sky. The man closed his eyes and tried to comprehend everything that was said to him. Did not work out. Everything was mixed up in my head. “Grow, flow, give light, feel emptiness... Some kind of nonsense...” The man shook his head and opened his eyes. A child stood in front of him. - Hello! - said the Child. - How are you here? - the Man was scared for the Child, - Where is the mother? And why no pants? - Mom is there! — The child made a gesture that is usually used to ward off mosquitoes. - And I... was... sweating! Why are you sitting? - He deftly changed the topic of conversation beyond his years. The man disapproved of the baby’s oratorical maneuver, but decided to answer (he still wouldn’t understand anything): “I’m looking for the meaning of life...” “And that’s it, nasol?” — the Child asked. “Nah... no nasol...” the Man mimicked. - And I’m annoying! — the Child said joyfully. - And how long? - the Man said sarcastically. - Don't know. - said the Child. The man began to lose his temper: “Well, what is your meaning of life, oh wisest of the little ones running through the forest at night without trousers?” But the Child is already gone. And only from the darkness came his iridescent laughter: “Ig-la-a-at!!!” - Oh, play! - The Man clasped his hands. - This is advice! - Frustrated, he threw a bunch of grass after the mocking Child. Missed. Meanwhile it was dawn. The man no longer wanted to ask anyone about the meaning of life. He stood up, dusted his hands off on his pants and walked wherever he could. Soon a melody appeared in his head, and he began to sing.

At first quietly, under your breath, and then loudly, at the top of your voice. And suddenly I felt everything around me freeze. Then the Man sang even louder, even more confidently. In his unexpected singing, he forgot about everything, and his soul felt so good, light and joyful that he was not even surprised when he saw that Time itself had stopped, allowing the sounds of a beautiful melody to flow, playfully shimmer and grow, filling everything around. ..

A person who knows how to hug is a good person

Quotes from Dostoevsky about man

***

A person, in addition to happiness, also needs unhappiness in exactly the same way!

***

A person who knows how to hug is a good person.

***

It's amazing what one ray of sunshine can do to a person's soul!

***

In fact, people sometimes speak about the “brutal” cruelty of man, but this is terribly unfair and offensive to animals: an animal can never be as cruel as a person, so artistically, so artistically cruel.

***

One should not think that a person who acts in accordance with his convictions is already a decent person. We need to check whether his beliefs are decent.

***

The more a person is able to respond to the historical and universal, the broader his nature, the richer his life and the more capable such a person is of progress and development.

***

Knowledge does not regenerate a person: it only changes him, but changes him not into one universal, official form, but in accordance with the nature of this person.

Quotes from Dostoevsky about liberals

***

“Higher liberalism” and “highest liberal,” that is, a liberal without any goal, are possible only in Russia alone.

***

Our liberal is never able to allow someone to have his own special conviction and not immediately respond to his opponent with a curse or even something worse...

***

Liberalism is not a sin; it is a necessary component of the whole, which without it would disintegrate or die; liberalism has the same right to exist as the most well-behaved conservatism; but I attack Russian liberalism, and again I repeat that, in fact, I attack it because a Russian liberal is not a Russian liberal, but is not a Russian liberal. Give me a Russian liberal, and I’ll kiss you right now in front of you.

***

Russian liberalism is not an attack on the existing order of things, but is an attack on the very essence of our things, on the things themselves, and not on the order alone, not on the Russian order, but on Russia itself.

***

My liberal has gone so far as to deny Russia itself, that is, he hates and beats his mother. Every unfortunate and unfortunate Russian fact arouses laughter and almost delight in him. He hates folk customs, Russian history, everything. If there is an excuse for him, it is that he does not understand what he is doing, and mistakes his hatred of Russia for the most fruitful liberalism.

Even in physical abilities, Russians are not similar to Europeans. Fedor Dostoevsky

Quotes about the Russian people

***

The Russian people seem to enjoy their suffering.

***

The measure of a people is not what it is, but what it considers beautiful and true.

***

The owner of the Russian land is only Russian. This is how it was and always will be.

***

Russia is all open to Europe, the Russians are holding themselves completely wide open to the Europeans...

***

They know about Russia that people live in it, even Russian people, but what kind of people? This is still a mystery, although, however, Europeans are sure that they have comprehended us long ago...

***

Yes, we believe that the Russian nation is an extraordinary phenomenon in the history of all mankind. The character of the Russian people is so different from the characters of all modern European peoples that Europeans still do not understand it and understand everything about it backwards...

***

The Russian person does not have the European angularity, impenetrability, or inflexibility. He gets along with everyone and gets used to everything. He sympathizes with everything human, regardless of nationality, blood and soil. He has an instinct for universal humanity.

***

And it’s scary to what extent the Russian man is free-spirited, to what extent his will is strong!

***

The Russian people, thanks to their benefactor and his reforms, have finally, little by little, become in such a position that they will inevitably become accustomed to efficiency, to self-observation, and this is the whole point.

Conscience is the action of God in man. Fedor Dostoevsky

The soul is healed next to children...

O you, who with a stinging reproach, Considering gloomy unbelief a vice, Flee in horror of the one who from the first years Madly extinguished the light that was pleasing to the heart; Humble your cruel frenzy of pride. He has the right to your leniency. With a touched soul, listen to your brother’s groan, The unfortunate one is not a villain, he suffers from himself. Who in the world will delight the souls of his torment? Alas! he was the first to lose consolation! Will a blow overtake his deaf destinies, Will the momentary gift of happiness suddenly be taken away, Will he embrace betrayal in love and friendship And will they feel the deceptive price: Deprived of all support, the son who has fallen away from faith Already sees with horror that in the world he is alone, And a powerful hand to him with the gifts of the world does not extend from beyond the world... In vain, in the splendor of the free simplicity of Nature, beauties are opened before him; In vain he turns his sad gaze around himself: The mind seeks the deity, but the heart does not find it. Sons of misfortune, passions and infirmities, We are all condemned to the terrible grave, having been born. Every hour mortal bonds are ready to be destroyed, Our age is an unfaithful day, a momentary excitement, When, threateningly enveloping us in cold darkness, The curtain of eternity shakes the hour of death, It is terrible to feel the tears of the last torment - And begin an unknown separation from the world! Then, talking with the uninhibited soul, O faith, you stand at the door of the grave, You quietly illuminate the night of the grave, And, encouraged, you let go with hope... But, friends! survive worse than friends! Only faith in silence with its joy Lives up the despondent spirit and hearts' expectation: “It will come! - he says, “a date has been set!” And he, the blind sage! at the grave he groans, the unfortunate man is separated from the joy of existence, he does not heed the sweet hopes of greetings, he approaches the coffin, calls out... there is no answer. Have you seen him in those silent places, Where the sacred ashes of blood and friends smolder? Have you seen it over the cold grave, Where tender Delia’s dear ashes are hidden? Called to the dead by the evening silence, He pressed his insensitive head to the cross, In tears of despair, in tears of bitterness, In the silence of horror, in the madness of frenzy, He sobs - and meanwhile, under the shadow of dark willows, Kneeling at his mother’s grave, There is a young maiden in sorrow serene Raises her painful and tender gaze to the sky, Alone, illuminated by the foggy moon, She appears like an angel of sorrow; She sighs slowly, hugs the grave - Everything is quiet around her, but she seems to be listening. The unfortunate man looks at her in silence, shakes his head, trembles and runs; But secretly a silent boredom follows him. Whether he enters the temple of the Most High with a crowd of people, there he multiplies the melancholy of his soul. With the magnificent triumph of the ancient altars, With the voice of the shepherd, with the sweet singing of the choirs, The torment of his unbelief is alarmed; He does not see the secret god anywhere, he does not see the holy thing anywhere, With a darkened soul he faces the shrine, Cold to everything and alien to tenderness, With annoyance he listens to the quiet prayer. “Lucky people! - he thinks, - why can’t I, with passions that rebel in humble silence, forgetting about reason, both weak and strict, with faith alone, surrender myself before God! Vain cry of the heart! no no! He is not destined to know bliss! There is only unbelief, Along the path of life in the darkness, the leader is sad, The unfortunate one is drawn to the cold gates of the grave, And what calls him in the desert of the grave - Who knows? but there he only sees peace.

Alexander Pushkin

Earn God by hard work!

Quotes from Dostoevsky about God

***

It's not there, but it's there. There is no pain in a stone, but there is pain in the fear of a stone. God is the pain of fear of death. Whoever conquers pain and fear will himself become God. Then a new life, then a new person, everything new...

***

Earn God by hard work!

***

God is the synthetic personality of the entire people, taken from its beginning to its end. It has never happened before that all or many peoples had one common God, but each one always had a special one.

***

I need God because he is the only being who can be loved forever...

***

If somehow it turned out... that Christ is outside the truth and the truth is outside Christ, then I would prefer to remain with Christ outside the truth...

***

Anyone who wants to see the living God should look for him not in the empty firmament of his own mind, but in human love.

Biography of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky was born on October 30, 1821 in the family of the chief physician of the Moscow Mariinsky Hospital. In May 1837, the family of the future writer moved to St. Petersburg, where from 1838 to 1843. Dostoevsky studied at the Engineering School, graduating with the rank of second lieutenant. After graduating from college, Dostoevsky decided to leave the service and devote himself to literary activity. The first novel, “Poor People” (1844–45), brought the writer success after its publication in 1846. At the same time, Dostoevsky entered the circle of writers of the “natural school”, where he became friends with N. A. Nekrasov and V. G. Belinsky, the ideological inspirer of the movement. Two subsequent stories - “The Double” (1846) and “The Mistress” (1847) - aroused criticism from Belinsky, after which Dostoevsky broke with the entire literary circle that had united at that time around the Sovremennik magazine. Over the next two years, he created a number of stories and novellas, of which the most striking are “White Nights” (1848) and “Netochka Nezvanova” (1849). At the same time, Dostoevsky entered the revolutionary circle of M. V. Butashevich-Petrashevsky and became interested in the socialist theories of Fourier. After the sudden arrest of the Petrashevites, Dostoevsky, along with the other members of the circle, was sentenced, first to “death penalty by shooting,” and then, according to the “highest amnesty” of Nicholas I, to four years of hard labor, followed by conscription as a soldier. From 1850 to 1854, Dostoevsky spent time in hard labor, after which he was enlisted as a private in an infantry regiment stationed in Semipalatinsk. In 1857, he was promoted to officer and returned to hereditary nobility, along with the right to publish. Returning to literary works, Dostoevsky first worked in the comic genre in order to avoid censorship criticism. So in 1859 he created two comic “provincial” stories - “Uncle’s Dream” and “The Village of Stepanchikovo and Its Inhabitants.” During his stay in Siberia, Dostoevsky revised his views, abandoning socialist ideas. In Tobolsk, following the stage, Dostoevsky met with the wives of the Decembrists, who gave him the New Testament. This was the only book allowed in hard labor. From that time on, Christ became the main ideal of life for Dostoevsky. In penal servitude, communicating with the people, Dostoevsky not only did not become embittered, but, on the contrary, became convinced of the need for “a return to the people’s roots, to the recognition of the Russian soul, to the recognition of the people’s spirit” for the entire noble intelligentsia. In 1859, Dostoevsky received permission to return to St. Petersburg, where he again took up literary work. For the magazine “Time” (1861-63), which he published together with his brother Mikhail, Dostoevsky wrote the novel “Humiliated and Insulted” (1861) and the work “Notes from the House of the Dead” (1860-61), where he artistically comprehended everything he saw and experienced in penal servitude. In 1864, after the death of his wife and brother, Dostoevsky was forced to stop publishing the Epoch magazine, which he also published jointly with his brother. At the same time, he wrote the story “Notes from Underground,” in which he reflected the experience of a personal tragedy. In this story the writer found his style and his hero, whose character would then become the psychological basis for the heroes of all his later novels. In 1866, Dostoevsky created two novels - The Gambler and Crime and Punishment. After the novel “Crime and Punishment,” Dostoevsky became one of the first ranks of Russian novelists along with L. N. Tolstoy, I. A. Goncharov and I. S. Turgenev. Contrary to the spirit of the era of the 1860s. Dostoevsky in his novel proved the need for faith in God through the portrayal of the main character as a typical representative of the youth of that time, who, being overwhelmed by the destructive ideas of nihilism, reached their logical conclusion - the denial of the concepts of good and evil, allowing himself to shed the blood of others. But life and the Christian nature of the soul led the hero to the recognition of God's truth, no matter how hard his mind tried to deny it. With this novel, Dostoevsky established the religious and philosophical direction in Russian literature, which was also chosen by L. N. Tolstoy, N. S. Leskov, F. I. Tyutchev. In the same year, Dostoevsky met his future second wife, A. G. Snitkina, with whom he married in 1866. In 1867, Dostoevsky and his wife went abroad, where in Geneva he wrote the novel “The Idiot” (1868–69), depicting in it the tragedy of a “positively beautiful man” in the conditions of modern reality. In 1871, he created the anti-nihilistic novel-pamphlet “Demons” in response to the sensational crime committed by a group of anarchist revolutionaries under the leadership of S. G. Nechaev. Dostoevsky saw in this atrocity a sign of the times and a harbinger of impending social cataclysms. For this novel, Dostoevsky was later called the “prophet of the Russian revolution.” In 1875, Dostoevsky wrote the novel “Teenager,” published in “Notes of the Fatherland” by N. A. Nekrasov. In 1879-1880 The novel “The Brothers Karamazov” was created, completing Dostoevsky’s great novel “Pentateuch” and reflecting the writer’s coming to deep faith. In 1880, at the Pushkin festivities held in Moscow, Dostoevsky delivered his famous speech about Pushkin, which became a kind of testament of the writer, in which he speaks of the “all-humanity, all-reconcilability” of the Russian soul and the great historical mission of Russia - the unification in Christ of all the peoples of Europe . The writer died on January 28 (February 9), 1881 in St. Petersburg and was buried in the Tikhvin cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.

Life of society, people, freedom:

The measure of a people is not what it is, but what it considers beautiful and true.

The highest and most characteristic feature of our people is a sense of justice and a thirst for it.

Reason, science and realism can only create an anthill, and not a social harmony in which man can live. You will never get anything for free. We will work, we will have our own opinion. And since we will never work, those who have hitherto worked instead of us will have an opinion for us, that is, the same Europe, the same Germans - our two-hundred-year-old teachers.

- I don’t know how to look at this? There are eyes, and look. If you don’t know how to look here, you won’t be able to study abroad.

If you want to conquer the whole world, conquer yourself.

In abstract love for humanity, you almost always love only yourself.

Master yourself first, and you will see heaven... Not a limitless personality, but humble yourself, subjugate yourself, master yourself - which, incidentally, is the most powerful manifestation of personality, and do not demand the rights of humanity, otherwise you will be the first to call the law for help. Yes, that's the end of it. When you are the first to not deserve them and the first in this ideal society to create dissonance with your malice and greed for free pleasures, for which you morally do not want to pay anything.

...public civil ideals...not organically connected with moral ideals...have never existed, and cannot exist!
