Friend of Paradoxes: 90 years since the birth of Sergei Kapitsa

Physicist Sergei Petrovich Kapitsa does not need any special introduction. From 1973 to 2012, he remained the permanent host of the popular science television program “Obvious - Incredible” and proved that science can be entertaining and interesting.

While remaining the editor-in-chief of the magazine “In the World of Science” and vice-president of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Sergei Kapitsa spent many years talking about science, technology and culture in a way that was understandable and interesting to everyone.

And to this day, his bright quotes and thoughts are more relevant than ever:

I knew Akunin when he was still the scientific secretary of our editorial office of the Pushkin Library, which published one hundred volumes of Russian literature. Responsibility is a concept that has practically disappeared now.

Peter Kapitsa, maxims, aphorisms, sayings

Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa (1894-1984) - a prominent scientist and organizer of Soviet science, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics (1978) for the discovery of the phenomenon of superfluidity, a talented student of E. Rutherford.

One of P.L. Kapitsa’s favorite books is “Maxims” by F. La Rochefoucauld. Brief and precise statements by the classics of this genre are often found in his reports and conversations. Kapitsa believed that humor helps in scientific work: “We somehow don’t know how to do the most serious things and at the same time laugh and joke. But it enlivens life so much and helps!” And Pyotr Leonidovich was a very brave man. “I am only afraid of tickling,” he wrote to his wife. Here are some statements by Pyotr Kapitsa.

The media are no less dangerous than means of mass destruction.

Everything simple is true... Simplicity is the greatest wisdom.

Collective creativity is nonsense, but creativity in a team is the only type of real and fruitful creativity.

Leading means not stopping good people from working.

Our science will never become leading until we ourselves learn to value our scientists.

Squabbles in an institution develop only when people are not sufficiently busy with their work.

A person is young when he is not yet afraid to do stupid things.

Don't ask me for permission to think - this is your profession.

The entire history of mankind consists of mistakes, and, despite this, every government considers itself sinless. This is the law of nature, and it must be obeyed.

We must learn from life, and not impose fictitious forms on it.

Life is guided not by logic, but by emotions.

By classifying science, we exclude from it the main element that guides and improves its health - scientific public opinion.

In modern conditions, the director of scientific work is like a director; he creates a performance, although he does not appear on stage himself.

Experience is the only proof that is convincing to everyone and to the end.

Freedom of creativity - freedom to make mistakes. Errors are not pseudoscience. Pseudoscience is the failure to admit mistakes. This is the only reason why it is an obstacle to healthy scientific development.

Nothing is more instructive than the fallacy of a genius.

Only the cook adds salt by eye, and physicists must calculate everything.

Everyone talks about the shortcomings. There are always disadvantages. We need to talk about how to eliminate these shortcomings.

The ability to restrict freedom in a country is a matter of good government manners.

Planfulness is a limitation of personal initiative.

True patriotism is not praising one’s homeland, but working for its benefit and correcting mistakes.

I have a rule in life: I never trust a person who has lied even once.

When it is impossible to speak out in newspapers, public opinion is expressed in jokes

You can learn to be happy in any circumstances. The only unhappy person is the one who makes a deal with his conscience

Time creates man, not man creates time

Difference of opinion is one of the most powerful motivators. This is the force that moves culture, art and science forward. Life would be unbearably boring if everyone thought the same
