“Everything is complicated” status, or 5 steps to make your life easier
How often do you say to yourself: “That’s enough. Tired. There are only problems all around!” How often do you look for someone to blame for your difficulties: “Fate is a villain, a sign under which you were unlucky to be born, a gypsy near the metro has the evil eye.” Problems multiply, and the “everything is complicated” status continues to haunt you, despite complaints and “explanations.”
For a long time I experienced similar feelings. I cursed fate when I had to submit the difference in subjects when transferring from one university to another. Following her mother, she repeated that “Capricorn, and therefore must climb mountains,” when she was preparing a complex sample for her master’s thesis.
And the other day I complained to my therapist that “everything is complicated” for me again. Difficult clients, complicated legal cases, well, everything is as usual. And she asked: “Why do you take on difficult clients? Why don’t you refuse?” My answer explained a lot: “Well, I can do it!”
This is how I create my problems, trying to “jump out of my pants” (
my mother’s expression
). The key word here is “I”.
So, the first step in a situation where “everything is complicated” is to find the reason. As a rule, this reason is not in the villainous fate, not in the zodiac sign under which we were unlucky to be born, but in ourselves.
We do it ourselves. But for what? Why do we need to embrace the immensity, jump above our heads, what motivates us? I was driven by achievement. A strong desire, no matter what, to achieve your goal.
The second step on the path to exploring “everything is complicated” is to find out what motivates us, to recognize our inner motivator. And here the correct question will not be “Why do I need this?”, but “For what” or “Why do I need this?”
Achievement helps me climb Everest while others stand in front of a small stone. Thanks to him, I have one half marathon, two honors diplomas and three published articles under my belt. I get an unreal dose of adrenaline when I achieve my goal. This is my thrill. My parents raised me this way: “Nothing is impossible, everything can be achieved!” Now I think so myself.
Everything would be fine if I weren’t a human. A person who is tired, exhausted, who sometimes wants to look down and just do nothing.
Step Three: Learn the pros and cons of your motivator. What does he give you? What does it take away? My achievement gives me an interesting, fulfilling life, the thrill of achievement, but it takes energy and strength.
How to be? Should I give up pleasure and live in peace or continue the mad race for achievements, getting a portion of the buzz every time? Living without goals is too boring for me, and chasing them is too tiring.
I started experimenting and lived without goals for a couple of months. I imagined that I lived on a paradise island where there was everything: fruits, water, sun, sea. I explored and appropriated the benefits that living in the moment provided:
- I became calmer, my sleep became stronger, and my mood became more positive;
- Communication with people when you are not in a hurry has become more interesting, deep and sincere;
- I began to enjoy simple things - a cup of coffee, the smile of a passerby and the bright sun;
- I wanted to be creative - write paintings, articles, master something I had never done before - pottery, photography;
- Miracles began to happen to me - problems that had been unsolvable for years were resolved by themselves.
I felt the value of life in the wake of the process. It turned out to be no less interesting and fulfilling for me than life in pursuit of goals.
Fourth step. Try “living in reverse.” For me it was a life without goals, with slowness and without haste. Imagine some bright picture (for example, life on a paradise island). Explore the benefits of “reverse living”, what does it give you?
But the reality is that, unfortunately, I lived not on a paradise island, but in a metropolis, with its frantic rhythm and multi-tasking. I had to set goals again. And honestly, I again wanted that drive that I experienced when achieving. I again felt like I was in a frantic race. The question arose again: what to do?
The solution, as usual, lay in the middle. And this middle, of course, is difficult to find, and even more so to stick to it. But it's worth it.
And I began to learn to balance between achieving something and not running after a goal, but living in the moment. I remember the words of one famous actress, when, when asked how to be a mother, an actress and a producer at the same time, she answered: “You need to learn the magic of switching. There’s no other way.”
Step five: learn to balance. To do this, listen to yourself, your body. When you feel the first signs of approaching fatigue, dissatisfaction, indifference, ask yourself:
- What do I really want now?
- Am I doing what I want?
- What prevents you from doing this?
- What can I do right now about this obstacle?
- Try it!
By listening to our body, we learn to find what we really want at a particular moment: achieving a goal, getting a buzz from it, or relaxing with a book in a hammock, watching the sun set
.
Do this simple exercise right now. And let this be the first step towards making your life easier.
