LIST OF REFERENCES USED

Linguistics as an independent discipline, aware of its object and its method, its place in the system of related sciences, is a child of the 19th century. This discipline dates back to antiquity: its original name “grammar” was a description of linguistic forms. In the construction of this formal grammar, a significant place is occupied by the principles of ancient grammatical theory inherited from antiquity.

It would be wrong, however, to think that the ancient teaching of language was limited to the creation of a grammatical theory adopted by the Middle Ages. The heyday of this theory dates back to late antiquity, to the era of the decay of ancient society and the withering of theoretical thought. Ancient language theory does not arise in the process of considering any particular, petty problems, but as one of the aspects of the main philosophical problem, as a question about the relationship between a thing, thought and word. The latest empirical grammar rests entirely on those theoretical ideas about language that were developed in Greek philosophy before grammar separated from it, and these same theoretical ideas are the most vulnerable point of ancient language theory.
