“Today I am a genius!”: Alexander Blok was born 140 years ago. Quotes and aphorisms of the great poet

Alexander Blok worked at the turn of two centuries - during the period of preparation and accomplishment of the proletarian revolution. He became the last outstanding poet of pre-October Russia, who in his work completed the poetic quest of the 19th century. With his name, a new, title page of Soviet poetry opens. 2020 is an anniversary year for his memory: on November 28 he could have turned 140 years old. Let's remember the quotes and aphorisms of the great representative of Russian symbolism.

First real feeling

Alexander Blok by origin belonged to the old Russian intelligentsia, which sacredly served science and literature. The poet's father was of a noble family, but he was raised by his stepfather, guards officer F.F. Kublitsky-Piottukh. At the age of 16, at a resort in Germany, the young man experienced his first love for Ksenia Sadovskaya, who was 37 years old at that time. Since then, he has developed for himself the main life formula:

Only a lover has the right to the title of man.

After graduating from Vvedenskaya Gymnasium, on the eve of entering St. Petersburg University, Blok became interested in Lyubov Mendeleeva, the daughter of the great chemist. He will dedicate the collection “Poems about a Beautiful Lady” to her, which will include 129 works written in 1901-1903.

“I’m so sorry”: the child got on the wrong bus, but the driver intervened in the situation

Unhealthy cravings for sweets. Nutritionist on ways to combat it while losing weight

Makeup artist Katie Hughes showed how to turn thin eyebrows into thick, beautiful ones.

I have a feeling about you. Years pass by -

All in one form I foresee You.

In 1903, the lovers got married, which did not stop Blok from having affairs on the side:

I always want to look into people's eyes,

And drink wine and kiss women,

And fill the evening with fury of desires,

When the heat prevents you from dreaming during the day,

And sing songs! And listen to the wind in the world!

However, after the end of the First World War, everything changed. The couple became very close to each other, the poet remained faithful to the main woman of his life:

The realization that the miraculous was near us comes too late.

Quotes from Alexander Blok

Prepared by: Dmitry Sirotkin

I present to you a selection of quotes from the poet Alexander Blok (1880-1921).

This is one of the few middle-aged Russian poets who enthusiastically accepted the October Revolution.

Quotes are summarized by topic: life, man, Russia, poets, love, art, women, society, dream, the meaning of life, politics, reading, poetry, about oneself, purpose, conscience and truth, drunkenness, intelligence, wonderful, words.

About life

Everything in the world is a whirling dance and the meeting of trembling hands.

Erase random features - And you will see: the world is beautiful.

Night, street, lantern, pharmacy, senseless and dim light. Live for at least another quarter of a century - Everything will be like this. There is no outcome.

Oh, I want to live madly: To perpetuate everything that exists, To humanize the Impersonal, To embody the unfulfilled!

We should not be afraid of death, but of empty life.

Life is without beginning and end. Opportunity awaits us all.

In most cases, people live in the present, that is, they do not live by anything, but just exist. You can only live in the future.

And eternal battle! Rest only in our dreams…

I bless everything that happened, I didn’t look for a better life. Oh, heart, how much you loved! Oh, mind, how much you burned! Even though both happiness and torment left their bitter mark, But in the passionate storm, in the long boredom, I did not lose the former light.

Difficult things must be overcome. And behind it there will be a clear day.

You know for sure: in books there are fairy tales, but in life there is only prose.

I always want to look into people's eyes, And drink wine, and kiss women, And fill the evening with fury of desires, When the heat prevents you from dreaming during the day And singing songs! And listen to the wind in the world!

And it seemed to everyone that there would be joy, That all the ships were in a quiet backwater, That tired people in a foreign land had found a bright life for themselves. And the voice was sweet, and the beam was thin, And only high, at the Royal Doors, Participating in the Mysteries, the child cried That no one would come back.

I, slowly, collected dispassionately Memories and deeds; And it became mercilessly clear: Life made a noise and left.

About a human

There are several people in every person, and they all fight with each other, and the worthy one does not always win. But often life itself solves what seemed the most unsolvable.

Anyone who realizes that pain, suffering and anxiety are part of life becomes a real person.

There are people with whom you need and can only talk about the simple and “logical” - these are those with whom you don’t feel a mystical connection. With others - with whom one constantly feels an affinity on whatever basis - one must talk about the complex and “deep.” This is where the truths of the world will become clear - through the communication of the depths.

In the meantime, we live in the unknown And we do not know our strengths And, like children, playing with fire, We burn ourselves and others...

The soul of a real person is the most complex, most gentle and most melodious musical instrument.

Sometimes you yourself won’t understand why this happens sometimes, that you come to people by yourself, but when you leave people it’s not you.

People are constantly drawn to the “new thing.” And it doesn’t matter that this “newest thing” can be a hundred times worse than such a familiar, cozy, dear “old one”! We still go to where the unknown shines with bright lights.

A frivolous person who does not know the truth speaks abstractly, arrogantly and inaccurately.

About Russia

Russia - Sphinx. Rejoicing and mourning, And shedding black blood, She looks, looks, looks at you, Both with hatred and with love!..

What dreams do you have, Russia, what storms are destined for you?

We, children of the terrible years of Russia, are unable to forget anything.

Yes, and so, my Russia, You are dearer than all lands to me.

Unhappy is the country that needs heroes.

The more you feel connected to your homeland, the more realistically and willingly you imagine it as a living organism.

In the hearts of people of recent generations there has been a persistent feeling of catastrophe. We are experiencing a terrible crisis. We don’t yet know exactly what events to expect, but in our hearts the seismograph needle has already deviated.

We are all unhappy that our native land has prepared such soil for us - for anger and quarrels with each other. We all live behind Chinese walls, half-despising each other, and our only common enemy - Russian statehood, churchism, taverns, treasury and officials - do not show their faces, but set us against each other.

About poets

I am a writer, a man who calls everything by name, who takes away the fragrance from a living flower.

What is a poet? A person who writes poetry? Of course not. He is called a poet not because he writes in poetry; but he writes in verse, that is, he brings words and sounds into harmony, because he is the son of harmony, a poet.

A poet is an unchanging quantity. His language and his techniques may become outdated; but the essence of his work will not become obsolete.

Don't listen to our laughter, listen to the pain that lies behind it.

Let them call: Forget it, poet! Return to beautiful comforts! No! It’s better to perish in the fierce cold! There is no comfort. There is no peace.

Writers learn only when they teach at the same time: they master knowledge best when they simultaneously communicate it to others.

Peace and freedom are also taken away. Not external peace, but creative peace. Not childish will, not the freedom to be liberal, but creative will—secret freedom. And the poet dies because he can no longer breathe: life has lost its meaning for him.

About love

Only a lover has the right to the title of man.

When we love unaccountably, The features of a lovely face are to us, All flaws are fleeting, His beauties have no end.

Yes, to love as our blood loves, None of you has loved for a long time! Have you forgotten that there is love in the world, which both burns and destroys!

I don’t like the empty dictionary of love words and pathetic expressions: “You are mine”, “Yours”, “I love”, “Forever yours”. I don't like slavery.

I'm scared to meet you. It's worse not to meet you.

Hatred is a noble feeling. Because it grows from the ashes of burnt love.

All that remains is to observe the pile of ashes with an extinct gaze.

By the way, quotes about love

About art

The artist's direct responsibility is to show, not prove.

When humanity is destroyed, there is no more art. Putting beautiful words together is not an art.

The worse life is, the better you can create, but life and profession are incompatible.

Art must rush to where some vice is hidden.

Actors, master your craft, So that the walking truth will make everyone feel pain and light!

The work of great artists is always a beautiful garden with flowers and thistles, and not a beautiful park with compacted paths.

A surefire sign that something is not art or someone doesn't understand art is boredom. Art should be a means of education, but its goal is pleasure.

By the way, quotes about art

About women

And slowly, walking among the drunken, Always without companions, alone, Breathing in the spirits and mists, She sits down by the window.

Your glance is for me to lie in wait for it... But you turn away your gaze... Yes! With your glance, you are afraid to burn the barriers that have arisen between us!

I forgot about valor, about exploits, about glory on the sorrowful earth, When your face in a simple frame shone on the table in front of me. But the hour came, and you left home. I threw the treasured ring into the night. You gave your destiny to someone else, And I forgot your beautiful face.

By the way, quotes about women

About the society

Only one thing makes a person human: knowledge of social inequality.

Idlers and irrational heads are harmful to the people's well-being.

To hate internationalism is to not know or feel the strength of the national.

It is not for nothing that the word “labor” proudly flies on the Soviet flag. After all, it is work that gives life, ennobles people, makes them disciplined and sincere.

About a dream

The impossible was possible. But the possible was a dream.

My dreams are sacred palaces, My love is a numb shadow.

What to do if that dream, like every dream, deceived you, And that life mercilessly lashed you with a rough rope of a whip?

Death is not scary for a hero as long as the dream is crazy!

By the way, quotes about dreams

About the meaning of life

Anyone who understands that the meaning of human life lies in worry and anxiety will no longer be an ordinary person.

It is worth living only in such a way as to make immeasurable demands on life: all or nothing; expect the unexpected; Let this not happen now and not for a long time. But life will give it to us, because it is beautiful.

Life always gives a person exactly what he wants. And if the wrong thing comes true, it means you didn’t really want it. And I wanted exactly what happened.

By the way, quotes about the meaning of life

About politics

Just as politics is an action against the imperfection of the planet, for it is only because nothing on Earth satisfies that one has to engage in politics, so literature is an action against human imperfection.

A phrase addressed to politicians: “Hands off literature!” - funny, but the phrase addressed to literature: “Hands off politics!” - unthinkable.

A people who use poets, some of them, as their mouthpieces, demands to be served, but does not demand to be served.

By the way, quotes about politics

About reading

The best time of life is at night before going to bed, when everything is quiet, reading in bed - then sometimes you feel that you could become a decent person.

A book is a great thing as long as a person knows how to use it.

You don’t need to read too much and, most importantly, creatively. Every author must be treated carefully, and then you can fish out a pearl from the sea of his words.

About poetry

The world is given boundless delight to the melodious heart.

Every poem is a veil stretched over the edges of a few words. These words shine like stars, and because of them the poem exists.

The nightingale's song is not free to drown out the rumble of the sea!

About Me

Today I am a genius!

If you love my poems, overcome their poison, read in them about the future.

I can only write for people who interest me; in this sense, works are the same as letters.

About the goal

It is best to set the most difficult goals for yourself. Even if you only go halfway, it’s still more than the road to small goals.

Only great things should be thought about, only great tasks should a writer set himself: set boldly, without being embarrassed by his own small strengths.

By the way, quotes about the goal

About conscience and truth

Human conscience encourages a person to seek the best and sometimes helps him to abandon the old, cozy, sweet, but dying and decaying, in favor of the new, at first uncomfortable and unlovable, but promising a new life.

Only the truth, no matter how hard it is, is easy.

About drunkenness

You're right, drunken monster! I know: the truth is in the wine.

And drunkards with rabbit eyes “In vino veritas!” they scream.

About the mind

The power of passion is nothing compared to the coldness of the mind!..

The victory of reason can only be the victory of the reasonable.

About the wonderful

The realization that the miraculous was near us comes too late.

I never dreamed of a miracle - And you calm down - and forget about it.

About words

Words have their own soul.

The last word seems to me to be the most important of all words.

By the way, quotes about speech and words

About miscellaneous

For you, centuries are for us a single hour.

They do not live to experience emotions, but live and experience emotions.

You can listen to music only by closing your eyes and face (turning into your ear and nose), that is, by arranging night silence and darkness - pre-worldly conditions. Into these conditions of nocturnal non-existence, hitherto formless and never-before-formed chaos begins to flow in and take on its forms—to become cosmos.

There is a good and bad eye, but it would be better not to watch anyone: there are too many unknown forces at play in each of us...

Doesn't it mean to understand everything and love everything - even hostile, even that which requires renunciation of what is most dear to oneself - doesn't it mean to understand nothing and love nothing?

No one. Only night and freedom. There's just an eerie silence.

It is obvious that Blok was a complex and ambiguous personality . It is interesting that, for example, Zinaida Gippius and Marina Tsvetaeva speak well of him, and Maxim Gorky and Joseph Brodsky speak very critically of him. Try to figure this out... Read more:

Quotes about Blok

  • Z. Gippius: None of my conversations with Blok can be conveyed. You need to know Blok for this to become clear. Firstly, he was always with you somewhere - I think that only very inattentive people could not notice this. And secondly, each of his slow, spare words seemed so heavy, so overloaded with something, that a light word or even many light words were not suitable in response.
  • A. Bely: To us who knew him closely, he stood as a beautiful mystery, sometimes close, sometimes distant (beautiful - always). We didn’t know who was bigger - the national poet, or the sensitive one, the only person obscured by the purple of poetic glory, like... a shadow, from the folds of which sometimes the features of a noble, all-understanding, new and beautiful person emerged...
  • K. Balmont: I have never seen a person be able to remain silent so beautifully and expressively. This silence spoke more than any words could say.
  • V. Bryusov: Among modern poets, Blok occupies a very definite position. He does not repeat other people's themes, but with fearless sincerity he draws the content of his poems from the depths of his soul. This gives his poetry a special freshness, makes all his poems vital, and allows the poet to constantly discover new sources of inspiration. Blok somehow immediately created his own style, which was largely original, but did not isolate himself in it and in each of his new books he looks for new ways for his creativity. (by the way, quotes from Valery Bryusov)
  • M. Tsvetaeva: What’s surprising is not that he died, but that he lived. After all, he is such a clear triumph of the spirit. (by the way, quotes from Marina Tsvetaeva)
  • M. Gorky: As Blok read, he resembled a child in a fairy tale lost in the forest: he senses the approach of monsters from the darkness and babbles some spells when they meet them, expecting that this will frighten them. As he leafed through the manuscript, his fingers trembled. I don’t understand: does the fact of the fall of humanism sadden him or make him happy? In prose he is not as flexible and talented as in poetry, but he is a person who feels very deeply and destructively. In general: a man of “decadence”. Blok’s beliefs seem unclear to me and to himself; words do not penetrate the Depth of thought that destroys this man along with all that he calls “the destruction of humanism.” (by the way, quotes from Maxim Gorky)
  • E. Zamyatin: Of all the St. Petersburg poets of those years, only one Blok was anti-Western (his magnificent poems “Scythians” and “The Twelve”). However, his repulsion from the West reached such an extent that it turned into a certain repulsion from the revolution, when in it, from under the original spontaneous forms, the dry Marxist frame began to stick out more and more. But Blok was only a unit, he walked alone, there was no one behind him.
  • I. Brodsky: For example, I don’t like Blok now passively, but before actively because of his bad taste. In my opinion, this is an extremely vile person and poet in many respects. (by the way, quotes from Joseph Brodsky)

"Twelve"

The poet perceived both revolutions of 1917 with mixed feelings. At the same time, he could have emigrated from the country, but did not do so, believing that he should remain with his homeland. He considered the October events a spontaneous rebellion, a “world fire,” but he accepted them almost with delight. True, his ardor moderated after a year. In 1918, he wrote one of his main works - the poem “The Twelve”, after which he admitted to himself:

Today I am a genius!

However, after “Scythians” and “The Twelve,” he began to experience creative stagnation associated with a rethinking of revolutionary events:

The impossible was possible

John Lennon's widow is already 88: what Yoko Ono looks like today

It's time to think about the future harvest: how to grow and care for leeks

Make way for spring! March is coming, who is waiting for love and happiness? Forecast for zodiac signs

But the possible was a dream.

Favorite quotes

For me, Alexander Blok is a unique personality, because he lived in a vague and complex era of the collapse of the familiar world, passing historical events through the prism of his perception. His quote about hatred is important to me because it differs from what many famous people say on this topic:

Hatred is a noble feeling. Because it grows from the ashes of burnt love.

I think this explains why he accepted the destructive revolution quite loyally. For him it was a noble cause.

And his statement about reading is also important:

A book is a great thing as long as a person knows how to use it.

I agree that from each literary work one takes away only as much as one can bear.

Departure

Blok lived a short life, especially in modern times - only 40 years. In recent years, he lived in poverty, not agreeing to work for the Soviet government or hold positions in any organizations or commissions. He died of heart disease, although it can be safely said that the basis of his health problems was ordinary hunger.

Oh, I want to live madly: to perpetuate everything that exists, to humanize everything impersonal, to embody the unfulfilled!
