In this poem, Carroll recalls a "golden afternoon" in 1862 when he and his friend, the Honorable Robinson Duckworth, took Rector Liddell's three lovely daughters in a boat for a ride up the Thames. “The first” is the eldest of the Liddell sisters, Lorina Charlotte, who by that time was already thirteen years old.
