One family finally bought a new apartment. It was a very convenient area: also for the wife, because she no longer had to commute two hours to work every day. And for my husband, who was also closer to the office where he worked. And the children moved to a better school with in-depth study of foreign languages.

The first days in the new home were spent worrying about how to arrange furniture, put things in closets, where to put flowers... The young housewife had no time to look around and wonder who lived next door. But when the main tasks were completed, one day while standing at the window, the woman noticed a neighbor who was hanging out her laundry after washing.

Museum Center Chronicle Truth is in the eye of the beholder

On April 18, 2021, on World Heritage Day, festive events were held at the Russian State University for the Humanities: two group excursions were held around the Educational Art Museum for employees of the Russian State University for the Humanities, and in parallel with them (from 11.00 to 16.30) in the Medici Hall of the Educational Art Museum named after. I.V. Tsvetaev (Hall of Medieval and Renaissance Art) the program “Truth is in the eye of the beholder” took place. Participants were offered a series of mini-tasks, which, according to the organizers, would help focus the viewer’s gaze on artistic monuments.

The tasks were different: find a sculptural portrait based on its silhouette, a monument based on the depicted fragment, guess a poetic riddle, conduct your own investigation based on leading questions, and finally, find a group of monuments located in museums and churches of a particular country. The task was prepared by student volunteers under the guidance of Museum researchers.

53 tasks were distributed. The program “Truth is in the eye of the beholder” was attended by five RSUH employees, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to the Russian Federation, one graduate student, one applicant and RSUH students: 21 first-year students, 10 second-year students, 11 third-year students and 2 fourth-year students.

The most active participants were students from the Faculty of Art History (21), the Institute of Psychology (5), and the Institute of Linguistics (4); other faculties sent “scouts.”

The most popular tasks were “Musical instruments” (9 people), “Poetry riddles” (7) and “Find a stranger” (21).

The tasks took an average of 7-10 minutes to complete, with the shortest completion time being 2 minutes and the longest being 21 minutes.

The feedback from the participants was interesting. The review “I didn’t like it!” turned out to be unique. from an IFI student, and the most common is the polite “liked” (31). Between the monosyllables: “interesting” (6) and single “great”, “excellent”, “cool”, “unusual”, “educational”, clarifying reviews were left: “more interesting than I thought”, “makes you look into the details”, “the most difficult thing is good!”, “difficult, good idea!”, “it was difficult, but interesting!”, “very interesting and unusual!”, “I want more of this!”

Overall, I can say that I really enjoyed participating in the quest, helping people, explaining tasks to them and watching them wander around the Medici hall in search of answers to questions. Even though I had been on my feet for three hours without a break, I did not feel tired at all; I didn’t want to just sit at all, there was some feeling of satisfaction that the girls and I had done such different tasks together, so I really wanted to quickly find out the results of my labors!

As for the students (and not only!) who participated in our quest, I can say that they also liked the tasks, since some people even completed several guessing questions one after another. I think they were most interested in completing tasks related to poems or strangers, judging by their emotions when answering. I personally also completed several, but I liked the task that Lera Tumilevich, my classmate, prepared the most (movement in sculpture). It was more complex than the others and required more thought and imagination, as well as my personal impression. I’m interested in flexing my brain, so to speak, so this task stood out to me in particular.

Each student reacted differently to the tasks: some were surprised that such tasks could be invented (“Find a stranger”), some rejoiced at each victory and ran to do new ones, some, slowly, did only one task, looking at the sculpture for a long time. Every person left the hall with a smile and this, I think, is the most valuable thing. Many said that they would like this to happen more often. I will always remember this experience, thank you!

What does the term “beauty” actually mean to us? Observing and thinking about events in life, I have always been interested in understanding the reasons for what is happening, looking deep, seeing behind the scenes, considering the movement of invisible streams that are reflected on the cinema screen, called our reality. And then one of these magical tools magically fell into my hands. :) A tool that always mysteriously and always unexpectedly allows you to open a path through the looking glass is the language of images. This magical language shows our world much deeper, more vividly and more multifaceted than any verbal description, than any logic of words. :)

“For those of us who are accustomed to perceiving and understanding the external world around us only with our minds, the transition from words to images can be both a shock and a relief. When reading, we try to remember and perceive as much as possible. The process of perception, driven by desire, is called “thirst for knowledge.” When visual images appear in front of us, we must learn to open up to them and perceive the information holistically. The experience certainly affects different areas of our personality. "Better to see once than hear a hundred times". When we perceive the world visually rather than verbally, we often find deep intuitive connections in it. As Frederick Frank says, “When the eyes open and begin to see, they no longer take anything for granted.”

When words fail, I turn to pictures. If I'm going through a difficult time in my life, it helps me calm down and focus. Often they are the ones who show us the truth much earlier than words.

One of my students decided to make a collage about his life. In general, such work will certainly show both the person’s past and his desires. One by one he selected photographs of the sea. In his collage, water was everywhere. But he lived far from the sea, in the Midwest of the United States, in addition, from nine to five he worked at a boring job, and his whole life was organized, safe, serious, planned and predictable. Both on a physical and metaphysical level, he wanted not only water, but also a flow.

“Maybe I’m just thirsty,” he joked. However, in some ways he was right - he longed for change and the living water that a rich life gives.

To make a collage, you need not only to tear, cut and shred, but also to assemble, glue, and create a whole from individual parts. Perhaps the most important part of this work, its goal is to come to terms with the different parts of ourselves. "
