What is sarcasm in simple words
To understand how sarcasm affects relationships, you first need to understand what it is. Sarcasm is a caustic mockery with a negative connotation, which indicates a shortcoming of a person, or phenomenon, or object. In ancient Greece, public people used sarcastic expressions to expose the evils of society or an opponent.
It has little in common with humor, because sarcasm, unlike irony, is an expression of the highest degree of indignation. True, in the end, sarcasm can turn into a positive judgment.
The tongue will lead to sarcasm
Statuses about sarcasm are designed for when you want to explain everything quickly and at the same time to a large number of people. The following phrases will allow you to make the most subtle, and at the same time, the most appropriate hints.
- Don't be too offended by the swearing. Perhaps this is in my principles...
- Whenever you do something stupid, remember that someone once took out a loan to pay for a wedding.
- Don't be afraid of "under the bed" monsters. Give them a bag of chips that you eat while watching a TV series, and they won't eat you.
- Why should a man worry about his appearance if he has already put on a whole pair of clean socks...
- Don't be offended by my sarcasm. This is how I defend myself from your stupidity.
- Appropriate jokes were invented in order to protect someone from suffering, and someone even from suicide.
- Do you know why guys make girls laugh so often? Because a laughing woman usually doesn’t understand much!
- I have so little strength that I don’t even want to pick myself up from the floor.

On the Internet you can find many memes based on the film “The Taming of the Shrew,” where the hero Adriano Celentano, an inveterate bachelor and rude towards women, throws various sarcastic phrases at Ornella Muti’s heroine.
Authors from the World Wide Web have diversified their repertoire of statements.
Sarcasm is an insult disguised as a joke.
For the author of this type of ridicule, this style of communication has its own benefits:
1. drainage of aggression, tension (so as not to be accused of rudeness and anger, you can always justify yourself with the phrase: “Don’t you understand jokes?”); 2. an attempt to assert oneself by knocking down the woman’s imaginary arrogance (“don’t have any illusions that I liked you”); 3. the desire to keep a woman in the dark regarding the real attitude towards her and, thus, avoiding responsibility in the relationship; 4. a form of provocation (during this communication, the woman experiences cognitive dissonance, thinking: “he seems to like me, but why is he acting so mockingly, as if he is completely indifferent to me?”). There is a desire to find out a man’s true attitude towards himself, to charm him in order to be convinced of his attractiveness. Accordingly, such a male provocation can prompt a woman to take the initiative into her own hands.
This technique is also actively used by pick-up artists.
In the process of this type of communication, the woman becomes frustrated, because her need for love and admiration is not satisfied, self-esteem falls, which allows the man to feel “on horseback”. The woman finds herself in the role of an eternal conqueror in the “waiting room.”
What does this form of male behavior indicate? About the method of psychological defense with which he tries to maintain his self-esteem and cope with a certain threatening feeling (fear of showing his vulnerability, imperfection, fear of attachment).
He denies his feelings and ridicules them; he is convinced that if he does not recognize his feelings, then they do not exist.
He devalues in order to cope with the idea of his limitations and imperfections. It’s hard to feel like a “small” and helpless, “defective” child in a cruel world, and therefore he splits off this “defective” part of himself, in his mind, and projects it onto a woman, making her feel defective.
These methods of defense help such a man maintain his self-esteem and the illusion that he can control everything, including his own feelings.
This behavior is typical of a narcissistic man. If, with such behavior, he avoids mental and/or sexual intimacy, strives for distancing, solitude, then we are most likely talking about an admixture of a schizoid radical. If he is hypersexual, then he may well be a carrier of a hypomanic character.
These men are not too concerned about how their spontaneity will affect others, despite the fact that they are afraid of being absorbed by a woman and becoming dependent on her. Therefore, often, after parting, even in the presence of sadness and melancholy, they continue to deny the significance of this relationship for themselves. They can also shake off the blame for the breakup and shift it onto the woman (“Can this be called love? She just disappeared, doesn’t call or write. Why should I worry about her?”), turn their sadness into a joke , teasing.
Denial of one's feelings and avoidance of grief often becomes the cause of psychosomatic and depressive disorders.
Awareness of the maladaptive nature of such behavior, of running away from one’s own feelings, is already a big step towards a harmonious, spiritually fulfilling life.

We've sorted out sarcasm, now let's see how it differs from things like irony, sardonic laughter and cynicism.
Irony
What is irony and what are examples of its use? Let's start with the fact that this is a technique in which, just like in sarcasm, what is said is the opposite of the intended meaning.
It has several forms: direct irony, self-irony and post-irony, when sincerity becomes difficult to distinguish from a satirical device.
- M+F What is LGBTQIAPP+: deciphering the acronym and main questions All people are different, and these differences are not limited to four letters.
The toughest and most evil of them is sarcasm, which we talked about above. The most striking examples of direct irony:
“Well, thank you, I helped! “- this is what they say to a person who accidentally harms someone.
The answer to a question about something boring and uninteresting: “Yeah, that’s all I think about.”
A message about something unpleasant: “I love a stick like a dog.”
Sardonic laughter
Although they sound similar, don't confuse the words "sarcastic" and "sardonic." Sarcasm is the most offensive verbal irony, expressed in a caustic tone. Sardonic means “cynical” or “mocking.”
Therefore, sarcasm is often sardonic. When a character uses sarcasm to make fun of someone else, it is a sardonic comment. However, the key difference is that a sardonic comment is not necessarily ironic. He can tell exactly what the speaker means, just in a mocking tone. For example:
I did not attend the funeral, but sent a letter saying I approved of it.
Mark Twain
This remark by Twain is certainly mocking: it expresses his dissatisfaction with the deceased in a rather harsh form. But this is not irony or sarcasm. This statement is much closer to witty directness and brutal honesty than to sarcasm.
Cynicism
Although cynicism is synonymous with sardonicity, it is a philosophy of life, while sardonicity is only a tone. Cynicism originally meant “appreciating the simple things in life,” but then this definition was absorbed into a new meaning.
Nowadays, cynicism usually refers to a self-centered and negative outlook on life. Cynical people tend to be skeptical and disdainful of sentimentality and “positive thinking.”
But despite all these negative connotations, cynical people often become extremely popular television characters. This is probably due to the fact that cynical, sardonic and sarcastic remarks often cause laughter.
