What is a mini capsule anyway?
This is a smart speaker from Mail.ru with the branded voice assistant Marusya. It joins the larger Capsule, released in April 2021 – but is not nominally considered a “budget” model.
The functionality of the Mini Capsule completely replicates its older “sister”: absolutely everything that the large speaker can do, the new, small one can do as well. The only difference is the size and design features.
The mini capsule went on sale on June 29 at a price of 5,490 rubles.
I've been using it for a little over two weeks and am quite happy with it. What pleases me most is the design. Today, this is definitely the most beautiful smart speaker available in Russia, and you won’t find anything like it for the money.

The speaker is stationary and does not have its own battery. She always needs food. She receives it through the USB-C port on the notch at the base. The charging cable and unit are integral and included in the kit. Cable length – 1.6 meters. This is quite enough to place the device anywhere. As a last resort, you can use any third-party cable and any charger, even the weakest one.
The speaker also has an AUX port, that is, a standard 3.5 mm minijack. It allows you to connect the Mini Capsule to external speakers for sound output. In this format, the Capsule microphones continue to work, just the voice and sound in general go through the output.
This is a very strong, useful case. The small speaker will add the smart functions of the Marusya voice assistant to any home theater or just stationary, floor-standing acoustics. It will also allow you to play music on them from connected streaming services - be it music from VKontakte or your Spotify account.

It’s worth connecting the Mini Capsule to external audio, among other things, because it doesn’t have any mind-blowing sound on its own. On the contrary, the built-in speakers with a power of 5 W are sufficient to fill the room in the background, but no more.
All this weighs 305 grams. Weight doesn’t matter, of course, because most will simply put the speaker at home in one place and leave it there forever.

Mail.ru ordered the design of the Mini Capsule from the British bureau LAYER. Among the latter's clients are numerous luxury brands, including electronics and acoustics. For example, Bang & Olufsen. Don't be lazy, look at the examples.
This is the case when designers fully earn their reputation. The mini capsule looks great: at the same time utilitarian and expensive, attractive and not provocative. You can put it in absolutely any interior with excellent results.
Most of the housing area is covered with acoustic fabric. It fits tightly, is hard to the touch, and the weaving itself is as fine as possible. Those who have already dealt with devices made from such material know: all these are advantages. Over time, coarse and/or soft-weave acoustic fabric naturally becomes dirty. In the case of Capsule mini, this should happen much later than, say, HomePod mini.
The top round panel is made of matte plastic, soft-touch material. This is a touch control panel for the speaker. Typical keys are located here: volume, microphone mute mode, manual activation of Marusya.
An LED ring was placed under this circle. It is responsible for the animations of the conversation with Marusya, the reaction to changing the speaker settings and generally interactivity in addition to, in fact, the responses of the voice assistant. The brightness is high, but is adjusted automatically using a light sensor hidden in the body. That is, at night she will not be able to turn into a lamp without permission.
Finally, on the front side under the acoustic fabric there is a digital screen - not LED, but digital. It displays the current time, weather and volume level according to an active voice request or when you press the buttons on top. Its brightness is also adjusted automatically by a light sensor.
I have not seen a white model in person, but I have already placed the dark one in different places and am convinced that this will definitely suit the vast majority, even if the interior is generally light.
In short, I consider the design of this speaker to be the best among all Russian-made smart speakers. Others should look up to her in the future.

What the mini capsule can do. And Marusya at the same time
For initial setup, use the Marusya application for iOS and Android. It also configures integration with VKontakte and Spotify accounts. Each owner of a freshly unpacked speaker is entitled to 3 months of free subscription to VK Combo, so it’s definitely worth linking your VK account. At a minimum, get music without advertising and restrictions, as well as a bunch of discounts on Mail.ru services.
The activation process is simple, everyone can figure it out - the main thing is to have Wi-Fi at hand, and the rest will work out by itself. To my delight, 5Hz networks are supported. Those who know will understand why this is good and important.
After activation, connecting service accounts and a test run-instruction of the capabilities, you can safely forget about the application.

So, here is an incomplete list of capabilities that the Mini Capsule can do:
Send messages and emails. You can call friends through VK and send text messages there. Mail.ru Mail is connected in the same way, and any mail accounts connected to it and the address book are available. It is possible to type letters to new addresses.
Order food. Using Capsule, you can repeat a previous order in Delivery Club with one request. And this is just the beginning: for some restaurants (now it works with McDonalds), the voice assistant supports compound questions like: “Marusya, order a hamburger and cola.” The assistant will then connect the account, specify the address and make the payment using the method specified in the application.
Controls streaming music . The connection occurs directly in the VK, Boom or Spotify Connect applications. After Marusya, upon request, turn on your or any other playlist, mix playlists, find music on request. Moreover, if you start listening to the track on your smartphone, you can listen to it at home through the Capsule.
Manage a smart home. Although Marusya’s capabilities at first glance seem more modest than other voice assistants, today it works with equipment from almost 30 brands, including Xiaomi, Philips, Aqara, Elari, Redmond, Polaris, Perenio, Hiper and many others. Even more important, the Mail.ru developers taught the “Capsule” with Z-Wave.me hubs, which combine devices of the same standard.
In fact, all remotely controlled components of smart homes officially supplied to Russia are available - even those that are common in semi-industrial or professional environments. A complete list of devices is available on the website.
Overall, you don't have to worry about compatibility: all popular vacuum cleaners, air purifiers and humidifiers, kettles and kettles, thermostats and heaters, sockets and lamps are available with voice commands right now. Set an alarm and timer. “Marusya” recognizes not only the explicit request “Set the alarm for 8 am,” but also the more common requests “Marusya, wake me up at 7.” Convenient and effective – tested on myself. And it will wake you up. Reminders of events and birthdays are also present.

Tell tales and jokes. All smart speakers had the opportunity to tell fresh funny stories at the dawn of their appearance. It is not surprising that the Capsule can do this too.
With fairy tales it’s a little more complex and interesting: the speaker tells some fairy tales itself, and for some it sends text to the smartphone, including music and noise accompaniment.
Play interactive quests with children. In addition to the fairy tales themselves, Marusya has something like a children's reference book. For example, a child can say the name of a planet and hear a detailed description of the flight to it from the speaker. However, there are also simpler games that are suitable for adults - for example, “Cities”.
Provide reference information. The distance from the current point to a given point, travel time, conversion of units and currencies, mathematical calculations, articles from Wikipedia - all this can be obtained by voice request. Nothing special, but not worth mentioning. Yes, movie posters, match results and horoscopes (is anyone seriously interested in them in the 21st century?) “Marusya” also knows how to deliver with her voice.
Work as a white noise generator. The sounds of nature, musical instruments, and noise itself are quite soothing, help fill the silence or drown out external sound sources, and, as a result, make it possible to get a good night's sleep.
Limit access to “adult” content. Activating the children's mode leaves the Mini Capsule with only fairy tales, good-natured games and other interactivity.
